DEAR VOX, How did the Ivy League begin?

Curious Sports Fan

DEAR FAN, The term "Ivy League" was coined in 1937 by New York Herald Tribune sportswriter Caswell Adams. The press picked up on the phrase right away even though there wasn't yet any official eastern football league to apply it to.

In 1945 the Ivy Croup Agreement was signed. It covered academic standards and eligibility, and eliminated all athletic scholarships at the eight member schools. The commonly accepted founding date for the league is 1954, when the agreement was expanded to include all Sports. The first official Ivy season didn't begin until the following year.
