Let the bells ring! Joseph F. Marsh Jr. donated the Marsh Memorial Carillon and Tower to Concord College in Athens, W.V., this past October.

After the United States entered WWII, Joe transferred from Concord College to West Virginia University so that he could receive ROTC training. At age 18, rather than waiting to be drafted for military service, he volunteered and enlisted as an apprentice seaman in the U.S. Navy. The navy sent him to Dartmouth College as a member of the Navy V-12 unit, and he received his third year of college at Dartmouth, where he was a Rufus Choate Scholar, Dartmouth's highest honors group.

Marsh completed his undergraduate education at Dartmouth with the class of 1947, where he earned his degree magna cum laude, was elected to Phi Beta Kappa, and was awarded a Dartmouth graduate fellowship for study during 1947-48 at the National Institute of Public Affairs in Washington. After receiving his M.B.A. from Harvard University, he did advanced research in public administration at Oxford University in England. For seven years, from 1952 to 1959, Marsh was a member of the faculty at Dartmouth College, serving as an instructor in "Great Issues" as an assistant professor of economics and as faculty resident of Cutter Hall.

At the age of 34 in 1959 Joe was elected president of Concord College, where he served for 14 years. In 1974 to 1983 he was president of Waynesburg College in Pennsylvania.

Twenty-three of the 48 bells have the seal of Concord College, a decorative band, and various inscriptions, all "en relief." Bell No. 5 reads: DEDICATED TO DARTMOUTH COLLEGE, HANOVER, NEW HAMPSHIRE, USA; "The bells of Baker Library ring in my heart"; Joseph F. Marsh Jr. A.B. Class of 1947; Student, 1943-1944 and 1946-1947; Member of the Faculty, 1952-1959.

Bell No. 5, side two: "Dedicated to the memory of two great Presidents of Dartmouth College, Ernest Martin Hopkins 1916-1945, and John Sloan Dickey, 1945-1970; "Together with my father they were my ideals as college presidents and inspired me to do my best."

The Dartmouth contingent present were Norm and Helen Fink, Silvia Dickey (President Dickey's daughter), Joe Marsh, Martin Potter '64 (President Hopkin's grandson), and wife Marianne.

It was a great honor and a well-deserved one for one of our classmates.
