Dear Vox, Who was Hinman? Dartmouth has Hinman boxes, a Hinman dorm, the Hinman Cabin, etc., yet I have never heard of him. Some rich alum?
Dear Alex, Some two dozen Hinmans have graduated from the College, many from one New Hampshire family. The Hinman boxes get their name from Herbert Davis Hinman '07, Th'08, who helped construct the Panama Canal. His distant cousin John Holmes Hinman '08 was a forester who later turned International Paper into the nation's largestindustrial landowner. In the 1930s he arranged for the company to donate the Hinamn Cabin on Smarts Pond. he received an honorary degree in 1957, and the dorm named for him was dedicated in 1966. Dartmouth's first Hinman was Clark Titus Hinman, founder of Northwestem University, who received an honorary degree in 1842. The mostrecent is Kristin Hinman '98, a creative writing and English major who is the daughter, granddaughter, and great-grand daughter of Dartmouth grads. Vox.
