Good news about '67 classmates and their accomplishments. Bob Bell, a professor who teaches English at Williams College, has been named by Baylor University as the recipient of the Robert Foster Cherry Award for Great Teachers. The criteria for selection are extraordinary teaching abilities; record of positive, inspiring, and long-lasting effects on students; and scholarship demonstrating national and international achievements. Professor Bell holds the William R. Kennan Jr. chair at Williams. His areas of interest include eighteenth-century British literature, Joyce, biography, and autobiography. Bob's distinguished teaching and scholarship have been recognized by a National Endowment for the Humanities Fellowship for College Teachers (1990 and 1993) and the American Association of Higher Education Exemplary Teacher Recog-nition Award (1994). Fie will present some lectures at the Waco campus (a pleasant setting with which I have some familiarity as a member of the Baylor faculty in the graduate program in Health Care Administration).
Fred Cowan, who has been in private law practice in Louisville for the past six years, announced that he is running for Jefferson County judge-executive in the May Democratic primary. Fred is a former state attorney general (1988 through 1991) and state representative (1982 through 1988) for Kentucky.
Ralph Kirmser of Wilton, Conn., was appointed to the board of trustees at Norwalk Hospital. Ralph is a senior attending cardiologist at the Norwalk Hospital and director of the exercise stress testing laboratory at the hospital. Dr. Kirmser is a two-time recipient of the Outstanding Physician Teaching Award of the Norwalk Hospital/Yale University medicine residency program. He previously won the Dr. Melville Megida Award for notable capability in patient treatment and care.
For my own news, in February I conducted a consultation for the U.S. embassy in Suriname, providing on-site assistance to the armed services and medical faculties in Paramaribo on traumatic stress, psychological support, telecommunications, and distance learning opportunities. Developing multi-lingual web pages for psychological support and medical resources was stimulating. With limited resources available, Suriname provides an interesting challenge. Check your map of South America if you are not certain where Suriname (former colony of The Netherlands) is located.
