These words are being written toward the end of March, but you probably won't see them until about the middle of May, when the June issue of the Alumag appears. Consequently, you may hear before that who will be the 16th president of Dartmouth. As you probably know, President Freedman, after 11 remarkable years of accomplishment has submitted his resignation as of the end of June. The search committee, chaired by Virginia attorney (and ex-Green quarterback) Trustee Bill King '63, is hard at work interviewing candidates and has promised not to delay the announcement of their selection a moment after he (or she?) is approved by the Trustees.
By that time, you may also see word about changes to the expansive acres of Chase Field—a new indoor tennis facility in back of the Smoyer Lounge, relocation of some of the football practice areas, and an Astroturf field, complete with grandstands and flood-lighting. The floodlighting seems to be causing the delay in approval—homes on neighboring streeets claim that in the evening their own electrical facilities are adequate.
(This is Bill Scherman batting for Gene Orsenigo, who is at the hospital with phlebitis, from which Nina assures me he is slowly recovering, and by football season should be able to keep his record of no Dartmouth game missed in Lord knows how many years. Nina sent me the green cards and other communications on his desk.)
One, a summery Christmas card to Gene from Katie and Brice Banks, with the salutation "Hoe, Hoe, Hoe." "Our two grandsons attend Washington State. One is a junior and the other a freshman. Rose Bowl tickets were $75. Jeff and Ryan bought tickets and said they could have sold them for $1,000 to $1,500 each."
Arne Yensen says, "I can't think of anything that would interest classmates, except possibly our new phone area code. It's changed again—we had three in North Carolina; now we have six. Lots of people are moving here, plus lots of cell phones and pagers. Our Bermuda Village is about to enlarge by 60 percent 169 retirement homes, in the $350K bracket. A tunnel under NC-801 will connect the old portion with the new. We can't wait to see how it will be built, for folks 60 to 90." New phone number for the Yensens: (336) 998-6553.
From Em Day: "Had a delightful meeting with Harry Espenscheid today. He called and said, "Let's meet at The Milk Pail in Elgin." We had two hours over low-fat lunch sharing memories of Crosby Hall during sophomore year, canoeing home on the Hudson after junior year, and all that's happened since then, like two years around the world (Harry). He and Dorothy keep trim with horseback riding on one of their farms, plus swimming and tennis. Impressive! Harry hasn't changed (he'd say he's smarter now) and looks/talks/acts great."
Anybody lose a 1934 ring? A man named Bob Carye in Boston called the College and was switched to me. One of his employees found the ring a couple of years ago in the Med Center, turned it in, and Bob put it in a drawer and forgot about it until now, when he has just unearthed it. His phone number: (612) 552-0838.
