One of our most worthy and dedicated classmates passed away in Hanover after a cruel battle with respiratory problems and a brain tumor. Art Hills, class treasurer, former marine, successful C.P.A., expert tennis player, and beloved husband of Libby went to his final reward on July 5. A memorial service in Rollins Chapel, attended by 160 friends, bespoke of Art's standing in the community. Classmates Bill Hotaling,VicSchneider, Chip Deming, Gene Stollerman,Beany Nutt, Dick Hill, and Unc Richardson were among those saluting the memory of this great guy who hid a caring heart beneath a gruff exterior.
In a happier vein Dick Hill reported by phone that all was well in Marblehead, Mass., though Polly was facing a knee replacement in late summer in expectation of resuming her active lifestyle. Dick, an avid sailor of the New England coast for 30 years, gravitated (?) to power boats, first a 42-foot Grand Banks Trawler and now a 32-foot Lobster Yacht. He loves the latter for exploring the Maine coastline in the summer when he isn't playing golf. Sounds like the good life for a nice guy.
Closer to home, I talked to Doug Atwood here in Sarasota. We hadn't met in some time though he had attended the local D. Club meeting when all the old faithful turned out to hear President Wright defend the student life initiatives proclaimed by the Trustees. Doug and Francine otherwise keep busy playing in numerous bridge groups. Doug also had his left hip replaced, and that was a move for the better, he said.
Talked to another Floridian, since 1971, Cal Austin. Cal is hanging in there, though he is on oxygen and other medications and has had to scale back his activities in combat- ing environmental and ecological problems. He lost his wife to emphysema three and a half years ago, a great loss. Cal had a long career with the Navy Department and Department of Transportation, first in Indiana and then in Washington, D.C. In Fort Lauderdale, where he settled in Florida, Cal has been named director emeritus of the local civic association after 25 years of devoted service, a well-deserved honor.
Talked to Dr. Harvey Dworken out in Cleveland. He's been practicing for many years in the gastro-intestinal department of University Hospital, which is associated with Case Western Reserve University. Harvey sounded well and happy looking forward to his 50th wedding anniversary in November with Natalie. He is about to stop practicing at the hospital (don't these doctors ever get it right?), and expects to enjoy his new-found liberty.
A reminder from organizer Vic Schneider that the fall mini is set for Oct. 8-9. It's the weekend of the game with that eastern pow- erhouse, Lehigh. Pre-game get-together will be held, as usual, at Chip Deming's place in Hanover. The Friday night dinner will be at Quechee Club and Saturday night at Alden Inn in Lyme. The Comfort Inn in White River is holding some rooms for '41 visitors, so "y'all come!"
