Since the writing of my last column, two eminent Dartmouth dinners have occurred: The first, in Boston, was the latest Wearers of the Green dinner inducting new Hall of Famers, Olympians, and national champions since the last dinner five years ago. On hand from the class of '55 were two "wearers, " HartPerry, our only Hall of Famer, and yours truly. The second dinner in New York, organized and hosted by John French in the elegant Knickerbocker Club on Fifth Avenue, was a grand convening of more than 20 '55s (many with spouses) from the Northeast. JereDaniell conducted a Q&A on matters at Dartmouth, Ken Lundstrom reported on preparations for our 45th Reunion (now set for June 12-15,2000—so be sure to mark your calendars and make plans to attend!), and president Brooks Parker reported progress on the Alumni Fund.

In the interim, the good news has come from Brooks that our class did indeed meet its goal of $867,055 for the fund. So, congratulations are in order to head agent Woody Goss and his fine crew for all their hard work. Warmest congratulations are also due the following three classmates: To Dick Hogarty, named professor emeritus at UMass-Boston following a distinguished 30-year career at that institution, and appropriately profiled in a lengthy story in a recent issue of The Boston Sunday Globe.

To Joe Mathewson, recipient of a distinguished alumiius award from President Wright at an alumni dinner in Chicago this past May.

To Jim Wechsler, recently retired after 20 years as the universally loved and admired director of the Lebanon (N.H.) Chamber of Commerce, attested to by glowing letters in the Valley News kindly sent to me by David Mandelbaum '54.

Three other classmates have been mentioned in news articles around the country recently forwarded to me by Dartmouth's Development and Alumni Relations Office: The Plain Dealer of Cleveland reported JudHale's stop there during his annual press tour on behalf of The Old Farmer's Almanac, conveniently adding that while there he had dinner with Tom Roulston, chairman of Roulston E. Cos. Inc, and Tom's wife, Lois. The Berkshire Eagle also reported Jud's visit to Pittsfield (Mass.), where he opened his talk by proudly noting the Ahnanac's accurate prediction of the weather that day in the Berkshires. The Boston Globe quotes Jere Daniell twice on that most unique of states, the home of our college, New Hampshire: first on how the need for funding education is finally eroding New Hampshire's longcherished avoidance of a broad-based tax, and second, and perhaps ironically, how the same stubborn suspicion of centralized power has made the state one of the most protective of the rights of gays and lesbians. The Newton (Conn.) Bee presents a delightful profile of Harlan Jessup, revealing a list of hobbies that includes genealogy, vegetable gardening, beekeeping, and coordinating the maintenance of the 50 miles of the Appalachian Trail in Connecticut!
