Bill Breer suggested some time ago that we organize a reunion of the 1955 lightweight crew's trip to the Henley Royal Regatta in England. He and Ted Bradley and I were the '57s in that boat, and we were joined at Henley in July by shipmates Mike Fletcher '55 (with Peggy Bainton) and Bob Slater '56 (with Lyn and two sons and a daughter-in-law). Hart Perry '55 was our coach then; as one of the stewards running the Henley these days he (and Gillian) arranged privileged access for us this year.
Ken Rakouska and John Blades were with us in 1955 but couldn't make the reunion at the last minute. Pete Branch '55 (with Jackie Jones) did join us. We all, including Peggy Breer and Enid Bradley and Sally Jennings, vowed that we'll try to meet again in 'O5. Dartmouth's two entries in the Temple Challenge competition, under coach Dick Grossman, did well (but didn't get a trophy). Herb Roskind and Laura were hosting a Martha's Vineyard minireunion at about the same time. I'm not keen on lists of names, but, since '57s will have seen Wendie's full write-up in the newsletter, I am including this lineup to trigger nostalgizing among readers from other classes. Those present: Dave Thompson and Joan, Clark Griffiths and Happy, DaveCook and Celeste, Larrie Calvert and Gretchen, Dan Goggin and Connie, AdamBlock and Margaret Klass, Ed Waldron and Eileen Mann, Ann Johnston (George was working too hard!), Dick Perkins and Marion, Bob Burton and Marian, DanFrankel and daughter Elena, and HowieHowland and [surrogate secretary] Wendie.
In the same spirit, here's the list from the Rocky Mountain mini-reunion last spring, taken from Bob Adelizzi's memorable report in the newsletter: hosts MontePascoe and Pat and Wayne Kakela and Linda; also Bob Andrews and Sue, DougBrew, Don Saunders and Betsey, DonBurkhardt, and Bob and Tommi Adelizzi.
One more list, also from Tom Schwarz's newsletter, this one of '57s at the Wearers of the Green dinner: George Bixby and Margot, Herb Roskind and Laura, Dave Cook, Al Shapiro, Dave Orr, Doug Brew, Howie Howland and Wendie, and new Wearer of the Green Fred Shanaman and Jane. I will commemorate in this column everyone, '57 or alien other, who writes to me (or calls) with the names of those who attended more than one of these gatherings.
Sam Bartlett's great-grandfather was one of the founders of The Dartmouth Educational Association, "the largest source of non-governmental loan funds for Dartmouth undergraduate students." It's a low-key, almost no-overhead revolving fund that aims to "help students you would be glad to help if you knew them." Jonathan Strong '56 is president, John O. Parker '58 is vice president. The core of the operation is dues paying members. Only 13 from 1957 are now members (at $30 a year). I can have information sent to you, if you'd like to know more, or you can send for it to Michael Fay '7l, D.E.A. clerk, at Hale and Dorr, 60 State St., Boston, MA 02109.
