I wrote that Reese Schonfeld had left Beachamp Place Productions, which was in error. Indeed he remains as chairman of Beauchamp Place Communications as his full-time job, and after serving briefly on the board of Spectrum Technologies, he is now merely a shareholder there. Sorry for the error.

A couple of weeks ago, while vacationing in Charlottesville, Va., I exited a thruway and stopped briefly to discuss with my wife what direction we wanted to pursue. In truth, we really didn't know exactly where we were. Shortly diereafter a Jeep pulled up alongside us, its driver obviously trying to get our attention. We rolled down our window. He asked if we needed some help in finding our way. I told him where we were heading. Some cars drove up behind us; so we moved ahead a few feet, and he, totally unperturbed by the traffic, proceeded to give us very detailed directions to our destination. When he had completed his instructions, he asked me if I had gone to Dartmouth. I told him that I was in the class of 1953, to which he responded that he was a '93 and that he had noticed the Dartmouth insignias on my car, which is not too subtly adorned with such identifications. I didn't get his name because the traffic had become too heavy to stay and chat, though I did note that his license plates read "Virginia Green 93." Happily, the closeness of the many who feel a bond to Dartmouth never changes. Thanks. And speaking of such bonds, 31 employees of the Sharp Corp. of Osaka, Japan, contributed $3,100 to the Dartmouth 1953 Class Charitable Trust in memory of Pete Gartland, who died on June 23. Accompanying the check was a letter in which they wrote that they had been clients of Pete's for the past 30 years, and their relationship was more than that of attorney and client. He was a good friend and valued advisor. They knew his feelings for Dartmouth, and wished to honor his memory in this manner, for which we are appreciative. And to Peter's family, please accept our condolences. BobCallender and Bob Malm have apprised me that the trust continues to thrive and grow. Gifts continue to come in. Our goal is for the trust to reach a value of $10,000,000 by our 50th. Al Murphy writes from Rhode Island that after trying lawsuits of every type for 35 years, he has given that up, but not for retirement. He is now an arbitrator, and delighted to be so involved. I have just received a report on the status of our Alumni Fund efforts this past year. We had a super year with $415,337 from 368 classmates (67.3 percent participation.) This is a class record during a non-reunion year. Congratulations, and thanks to our head agent Fred England, to Bill Chamberlin, our associate head agent, and to all the agents who worked so hard to make this come about. In closing I'd like to offer the condolences of the class to Tim Reed on the loss of his wife, Joan.
