As our wondrous 45th slowly recedes into memory, our future beckons, and we begin our romp, optimistically, to our 50th Reunion. The class of 1953 continues to impress everyone with its vitality, its depth of talent, and its dedication. After 45 years, we have mustered yet another all-star cast of officers headed by president Chuck Reilly, head agent FredEngland, and mini-reunion chairmen BobCallendar and Dick Fleming. I will endeavor to measure up to the standards set by my distinguished predecessors as secretary. Speaking of Dave Halloran, our webmaster extra ordinaire, he and his new bride, JoAnne, are honeymooning in Europe. They're visiting their ancestral homes in Northern Italy and West Ireland. Lots of luck! Mitzi and FredCarleton are also traveling this summer, making several trips to Isle Au Haut, Maine, fol lowed by a couple of weeks in Georgian Bay on Lake Huron. When they return from their travels, they'll be moving into their new home (1785) in Etna, N.H.
I was delighted to speak with BillFriedman. He continues to be actively engaged in the real-estate business in New York City. His wife, Lynne, a Ph.D. graduate of Columbia, works as an independent consultant to different corporations. Their daughter Katie, with whom I had the pleasure of spending a few hours last spring, is entering her senior year at the Chapin School, where she is already an accomplished actress, performing not only in her own school productions but providing her thespian skills to neighboring all-boys Collegiate School.
Dave Horlacher has related to me that he and Marie really loved the reunion. Afterward they spent a few days in Maine with Loretta and Lowell Holway and Marian and Peter Schwarzkopf. Dave is enjoying his second career as the Hepburn Professor of Economics at Middlebury, where he has just been selected to receive a Davis Fellowship for application of computer-based technology to designing and presenting courses.
Bill Hazelton tells me that he and his wife, Terri, are delighted that their son Ricky '90 has returned from the South and taken a position as assistant director of college guidance at the Williston Northampton School in Easthampton, Mass. It is now a breeze for them to complete their personal version of the Indy 500, visiting their three sons and their families. First to son Billy, president of Rensselaer Securities Corp. in Troy, then back through Easthampton to see Ricky, and then on to Lang Island, where Bob lives, teaching at Chaminade High School and coaching their lacrosse team. Terri and Bill plan to spend a few weeks in the Quechee Hanover area as usual this fall and will undoubtedly get to a few football games.
Speaking of football games, our schedule of mini-reunions this fall is complete, and includes parties after the Pennsylvania, Lafayette, Yale, Harvard, and Columbia games. For more specific information, please refer to our wonderful '53 Out.
Please send me your tidbits of news, and I will try to pass them along without reducing them to tedium. I can be reached at the addresses and number below. Cheers!
