It's September 1938. We're no longer pea-green freshmen. As sophs we're making our presence felt on the campus. BobHarvey is working toward editor-in-chief of The Dartmouth, Mort McGinley is climbing the organizational ladder at the DOC and John Kelley is laboring on offense and defense for Red Blaik. Gus Broberg is on his way to the Dartmouth Hall of Fame in basketball and baseball, and Bob Feller is making his mark as a Jacko cartoonist. And we all are pitching in to clear the debris from the memorable September hurricane.
Fast forward 60 years to September 1999. Hurricane Dennis with strong winds spared the Florida coast but inflicted heavy damage on the Carolina coast. Then came Floyd with its heavy rains causing flooding from North Carolina to New Jersey. BillBest prudently left his home in Kill Devil Hills, N.C., in advance of Floyd's arrival. He and Marian spent a few nights in a Richmond, Va., hotel and were relieved to find only a few scratches on their sailboat when they returned home.
Penny and Jack Waring were too far inland near Winston Salem, N.C... to worry about Hurricane Floyd. They were happily re-living their 16-day cruise in May when they studied medieval history in Spain, Portugal, Netherlands, and France. On the other hand Jean and Don Knight took Floyd seriously and evacuated their barrier island at Ponte Vedra Beach by going to their son's home in Tampa on the opposite coast of Florida. There they relaxed with fond memories of a two-week cruise of Jacksonville Symphony supporters that Don had led to Dover, Nice, and points in between.
Pudge and John White in Madison, N.J., had 12 inches of rain in 48 hours courtesy of Floyd, but no flood damage. John had a successful hip replacement in June to join the earlier replacement of both knees. Unfortunately Pudge is still having trouble with her pain management. Way up north in Cape Elizabeth, Maine, BobSteele reported no problem with hurricanes, but did allow that he is incapacitated by an over supply of oxygen in his blood. Our thoughts are with Bob and all other classmates who are struggling with health problems.
