The thanks of the class go to former secretary Ham Chase and to class president AndyMcCullogh for filling the void left by the death of our secretary, Ed Grady. The writer takes over with the knowledge that classmates will offer comments and news of their activities.

The lead time for publication makes timely comments awkward. For instance, hardwood trees are just now beginning to turn color and publication of this material will be in December.

Looking back, how many of us spent time in Hanover in the summer when College was not in session? As one of a number of our class who grew up in Hanover, the writer recalls a sleepy New England town in the 1930s with a college of equal size in session fall, winter and spring. Summers ran at an unhurried pace with light traffic and no traffic lights. Leisure activities including swimming, hiking, golf and tennis. Bicycles were a favorite means of transportation until the freedom resulting from a driver's license arrived. During the college year, in addition to home football games, Winter Carnival was a big event, resulting in crowds, an influx of girlfriends and coverage of athletic events in all major newspapers. As might have been expected, local high school athletic events played second fiddle to those of the college. We saw the disaster resulting from the Dartmouth Hall fire in 1934 and one of the College's biggest celebrations when Dartmouth first beat Yale in football in 1935. Other class members who enjoyed this life were JohnBill, Phil Booth and Al Burbank. Other Hanover natives who started with us in 1943 were John Durant and Phil Sargent, both of whom ended up affiliated with the class of 1949 after military service.

Enough from the past for now. We need news from you.

The sympathy of the class is extended to the families of classmates who passed away recently: Bill Donahue, Russ Foster, JimHolway, Lynn Knapp, Dick O'Haren,Vince Prendeville and Leland Welch

Happy Holidays.
