Donvan 77 Earns Emmy for News Coverage
DECEMBER 1999

John Donvan '77 was honored in August with a News Emmy for Outstanding Coverage of a Breaking News Story for his ability to capture middle America's views on Washington's antics.

Throughout his travels with the President during a stint as ABC's Chief White House correspondent from January 1997 to January 1998, Donvan noticed that small-town America still reveres the presidency much more than cynical Washington. He approached Nightline about doing a show exploring contrasts between the ways small-town America and the White House advance team prepare for a presidential visit.

But when he traveled to small-town America—specifically LaCrosse, Wise.it was when the Lewinsky scandal broke in January 1998, for a story on how the American people were reacting to the "crisis in the White House." The broadcast, seven days after the Lewinsky announcement, was so compelling that Donvan returned three times over the next year to "take the pulse" of middle America on the Starr investigation and impeachment process.
