The Class Officers Weekend
JUNE 1971

Gathering in Hanover shortly after the Dartmouth Trustees had voted to consider the establishment of an associated school for women, 249 class officers found coeducation crowding out some of the more usual topics that had been scheduled for their annual spring meeting.

As a result of lengthy discussion following President Kemeny's talk on Friday evening, April 30, and of formal action at a general session the next morning, two delegates from each of the class officer associations will come to Hanover on June 18-19 for a thorough briefing and discussion of the subject of coeducation with members of the Trustee Study Committee and other officers of the College who have been involved in the study. They will take whatever action they wish in reporting back to the members of their associations or to alumni in general.

Attendance at this year's meeting was only slightly below last year's record figure. The 249 class officers were accompanied by 184 wives, for a total of 433 attendants (last year's record was 435) representing classes from 1902 through 1971. Four classes — 1921, 1923, 1936 and 1946—had eight officers present. Two classes—l937 and 1942—had seven officers present, while six classes had six and twelve classes had five. In addition to the formal program, the weekend provided an opportunity for the review of class affairs by class presidents, secretaries, treasurers, agents, newsletter editors, bequest chairmen, class giving chairmen, and reunion chairmen.

Soon after arriving in Hanover on Friday afternoon, officers and their wives gathered in Alumni Hall to hear several special presentations. Willem M. Lange III, director of Dartmouth Outward Bound, and student participants described some of their experiences in this program designed to develop self-reliance. The environmental activities of the D.O.C. were discussed by President William H. Schlesinger '72, and experiences as a resident counselor in the ABC House for Indian Americans in Woodstock, Vt., were described by William P. Yellowtail Jr. '69. A final talk was given by Richard W. Olmsted '32, Business Manager of the College.

Following Friday evening's buffet banquet for officers and wives, President Kemeny addressed the group in 105 Dartmouth Hall. He devoted his remarks primarily to the subject of coeducation, reviewing what he considered the valid pro and con points that had come up in his tour of Dartmouth alumni centers.

Following the President's talk, Class Secretary Richard K. Montgomery '35 arose to read a lengthy resolution that he wanted the officers to adopt. The gist of it was that the Quayle Survey had misled the College into underestimating alumni opposition to coeducation and that there should be fuller communication with the alumni before a decision is taken.

It was agreed that the general meeting the next morning would be a more appropriate time to discuss and act on Mr. Montgomery's resolution. At that Saturday morning session of all class officers, a substitute resolution was put forward, proposing that each association send two delegates to Hanover for a June meeting as mentioned above. Seconded by Mr. Montgomery, the motion was adopted. The officers also expressed confidence that the Trustees, in any decision taken on coeducation, would act in the best interests of Dartmouth College.

This action taken, the class officers then heard reports from Robinson Bosworth Jr. '37, chairman of the 1971 Alumni Fund; Edward T. Chamberlain Jr. '36, director of admissions; Arthur P. G. McGinnes '64, class president and head of the Class of '64 project which supports Tucker Foundation activities in Jersey City; and Walter S. Yusen '58, class secretary and alumni coordinator of the skiing, golf and tennis weekends newly introduced for alumni and their families.

Separate meetings of the various class officer associations were held during the remainder of Saturday morning, and at these sessions the following delegates and alternates were chosen for the June 18-19 meeting on coeducation:

Class presidents—Bertram R. MacMannis '39 and Louis V. Gerstner Jr. '63; alternate, Josiah Stevenson IV '57; class secretaries—Richard K. Montgomery '35 and David A. Schaefer '63; alternates, Harold F. Braman '21 and William H. Miles '56; class treasurers - Willard C. Wolff '31 and John T. Schiffman '62; alternates, Theodore R. Miner '23 and William Barnet III '64; class agents—Edwin C. Chinlund '29 and John F. Reno '61; alternate, Wesley H. Beattie '33; newsletter editors Dick Dorrance '36 and Eugene H. Kohn '60; alternate, Walter W. Vail '58; bequest chairmen—Herbert A. Wolff '10 and Paul L. Guibord '36; alternates, Jack D. Gunther '29 and Gordon K. Wentworth '40; class giving chairmen—Stanley H. Feldberg '46 and Richard W. Bandfield '49; alternate, Townes M. Harris Jr. '47.

At Saturday's closing luncheon, President Kemeny again spoke briefly, this time on the subject of today's undergraduate, whom he praised highly for intelligence and social concern. The Dartmouth Alumni Award was presented to Edward B. Pease '25 (see following story) and winners of the class-officer-of-the-year awards were introduced: President, Gilbert Balkam Jr. '36; Secretary, Dr. Stanley B. Weld '12; Treasurer, James H. Colton '16; News-letter Editor, Prof. John B. Stearns '16; and Bequest Chairman, Richard P. White '18. Roger S. Aaron '64, winner of the John R.
