Your philanthropic support bestows on Dartmouth the most profound ability the power to release the potential that lies within. The gifts that you, and thousands like you, made during the past year enable Dartmouth and our students to envision, innovate, and lead. During 1998 your generous donations to the College totaled $90.2 million. The College is grateful to the 23,662 alumni and 3,098 parents who supported Dartmouth last year. The following report on giving highlights those achievements and the power of philanthropy to ensure a strong Dartmouth.

'Our goal remains the pursuit of our historic mission. Our commitment is to learning and scholarship, within a talented and diverse community. proud of its heritage, must be forever new." James Wright President

" Charting the power of philanthropy at Dartmouth provides variations on a fundamental theme: gifts to the College strengthen our financial foundation, support our students, and preserve our educational mission. Fiscal ,998 was another exceptional year for Dartmouth. Careful management of expenses by departments around the College coupled with the generous impact of philanthropy and a positive investment environment resulted in a modest operating surplus of $153 thousand. As the pie charts below illustrate, almost a third of all Dartmouth's operating revenues results from charitable giving. Over the years, gifts have helped to build the College's most significant resource: its endowment. Thanks to the continuing support from alumni and friends and favorable markets, the endowment grew in 998 by $242 million, a record amount, to $(.53 billion. Clearly, the College's fiscal health is sustained through the generosity of our many benefactors." Edwin L. Johnson '67, Acting Vice President & Treasurer
