Richard Halloran '5l has been decorated with the Order of the Sacred Treasure, Gold Rays with Rosette, by the emperor of Japan for writing about Japan for 40 years for The New York Times, the Washington Post, and Business Week.The announcement cited his book, Japan: Images and Realities, published in 1969, and said: "Mr. Halloran's sharp analyses of Japanese history, politics, economy, and culture enjoyed favorable comments in the United States, thus contributing greatly in promoting the understanding of Japan among the American and other English-speaking peoples." Halloran first went to Japan and Asia in 1954 while in the army and later earned a master's degree in Asian studies at the University of Michigan. Now a freelance writer based in Honolulu, he covers Asia and its relations with the United States, mostly on security issues, for various publications in America and Asia.
