Bill Jarrett reports that the exploits of the Vikings and Jesse "the Gov" Ventura made it an eventful autumn in Minneapolis. "The local Dartmouth club recently gathered to hear a first-hand account of the Vikings' miracle season from the former Dartmouth and current Viking quarterback Jay Fiedler. My sons Daniel (9) and David (6) were enthralled by Jay's behind-the-scene perspective. They are doing great in Edina's high-powered hockey program, but Jay may have turned them on to football (which would make this old linebacker proud, but probably would not please mom).
"I am busy as a managing director for the M&A investment bank Goldsmith, Agio, Helms & Cos., a chauffeur for my overscheduled kids, and a dabbler in hockey, skiing, and tennis. We Minnesotans (I'm now a five-year veteran since we moved here from Darien, Conn.) try to make the most of the winters by taking advantage of the interminable snow and ice, but the Twin Cities' Winter Carnival doesn't compare to Hanover's.
"Ro Griggs visited me from Tucson during a recent business trip to Phoenix. Ro and his wife, Thelma 'T', have their own business, which combines their talents in medicine (Ro), Spanish (T), and consulting. They have three engaging and extremely cute daughters. Ro and I, enjoying some martinis and cigars, contemplated the joy and wisdom of somehow putting together a business consisting of our old Dartmouth buddies."
Earlier this year, Anne Goode Stalker and her husband, Peter, traveled to Chongquing, China, to adopt a seven-month-old baby girl. By the end of the year, young Helen was chasing the family setter throughout the house and identifying the areas that haven't been baby-proofed. The other Stalker; children, aged 13, 10, and 7, are doing well in school and are very active swimmers and skiers. Peter, who recently retired after 15 years in the venture capital business, was able to spend 40 days skiing last year when he wasn't busy teaching his daughters to jitterbug. Anne is active in community Bible study and teaches a preconfirmation Sunday school class.
Barry Hardwick and Alan Muir led the Boston Athletic Association team to victory in the national master's cross-country championship in Orlando in December. Although Barry did celebrate by spending a week at Disney World with his wife, Marcia, and sons Benjamin and Christopher, he had to turn down the starring role in the usual Disney commercial to retain his amateur status.
