A group of'59s has formed Dartmouth Partners in Community Service (DPCS) to provide alumni mentors and stipends for Dartmouth undergraduates to spend off-campus terms working at nonprofit organizations ranging from AIDS outreach in Alaska to a Miami drug-prevention program. DPCS, which is based at the Tucker Foundation, has provided more than 50 students with up to $2,000 per term in the four years it has been operating.
Emily Lam '99 worked with mentor Michael Stern '59, Tu'60, tutoring children in the East Harlem School in New York City through a DPCS internship. And MarkKutolowski '99 did an internship in the summer of 1996 at Roger's House in Rochester, N.Y., a residential community for people recently released from prison. At Roger's House Kutolowski spent most of his time talking with residents and giving them rides. "Trearing residents with respect was probably the most important thing I could do," he says. "Mark changed because of exposure to a whole new culture," says mentor Alan Ziegler '59. "And I think the whole house changed because of exposure to a newculture."
The new program earned the class this year's Dartmouth Alumni Association Special Recognition Award. For details, point your browser to or call Karl Holtzschue '59 at (212) 472-1421.
