Fifty Years Ago: Unbeaten and nationally ranked, Cornell's football team swaggered into Hanover on Houseparties Weekend of our junior year, heavily favored to scalp Dartmouth's Indians. But our Big Green team was on fire right from the kickoff. Quarterback John Clayton zapped two of his textbook touchdown passes to Red Rowe. And the ultimate humiliation Green captain Herb Carey sacked Cornell halfback Hillary Chollet in the end zone for a safety. Final score: Dartmouth 16, Cornell 7. The partying that night was really something.

So it's only fitting that the opponent for our '99 mini-reunion homecoming Oct. 22- 24 is Cornell, affording pleasant memories of that great '49 triumph in addition to the usual pleasures of our annual fall get-together. Friday night we'll have drinks and food at "Martin's Deli" in Blunt, followed by the parade, Dartmouth Night festivities, and the bonfire. Saturday we'll gather as a class for pre-game tailgating in the Thompson Arena parking lot. After the game comes another elegant reception at the home of Barbara and Dave Hall. The addition of a sendoff Sunday brunch last fall was well received, so we'll do it again this year, at the River Valley Club on the road to Lebanon. Join us! Mini-reunion chair Jerry Mitchell has lined up a block of rooms at the White River Ramada Inn (802-295-3000). Just tell 'em you want to reserve one of the rooms held for the class of 1951 (deadline for calling, Sept. 15). '51 OUT!

Fueled by the boundless energy of special projects chair Bob Hustek, our class's good works have long been worthy of pride, but we've nicely upped the ante this time. At the class executive committee meeting last May, Bob brought in Tucker Foundation Associate Dean Jan Tarjan for a presentation on its programs. It soon became clear they had a real need for a van to move students out into the Upper Valley to support the America Reads program in a number of area schools, and similar volunteer Tucker activities in schools, prisons, and medical facilities. We approved the gift of a van on the spot, class president Henry Nachman and Hustek got busy forthwith, and the deal was sealed in June. By the time you read this, Tucker Foundation troops will be transported in a Toyota van, thanks to our class gift of $25,000.

Now comes an appeal from 50th Reunion classbook editor Bill Boynton and his special essays editor, Bob McCabe. They plan a major "Ever Green" theme feature article on class members who have had varied, interesting careers and/or major extracurricular activities over a wide range—anywhere from leading a major charitable achievement, to doing a notable coaching job as a volunteer, to climbing Mt. Everest, to discovering a miracle drug. Please suggest the names of classmates you know of who have achievement in at least three such varied walks of life, professional or otherwise (and don't be modest—nominate yourself). Please submit suggestions to Bob McCabe (146 Rue de Grenelle, Paris 75007, France; phone 330145515155; fax 330145512373; ).
