I welcome you all to the New Millennium. I can remember looking at my "retirement date of 2001" and thinking that was far in the distance. I am happy to be greeting you!
I am becoming a believer in this "reconnecting" thing. I received an e-mail from Peter Wolford, once the "Dean" of the third floor of South Fayerweather. Pete is enjoying the good life in Aspen and is pleased about reaching age 62, as it enables him to obtain discounted airline tickets! He sees Mike Tighe and Kurt Christianson when the snow flies, and Jim Roddy visits during the summer months. Pete also saw John Marsh recently in Savannah, where John has easily become a low-handicapper! Peter invites all to join him in Aspen.
Bob Perron, a long-time nationally recognized photographer, recently held a sizable exhibit of his work at the Connecticut River Museum in Essex, Conn. Bob has always specialized in nature photography, almost all of it shot out of small planes, whether in the United States or South America. Of late, Bob has focused on the sea coasts—barrier islands, river estuaries, marshes, etc., "the battleground of hurricanes trying to re-configure the coast while landowners try to keep it stable." Bob's recent exhibit included some photos around Dartmouth as he was illustrating the Connecticut River as it flows into Long Island Sound. Another sure source of news of classmates comes simply from reading the financial pages. Our class treasurer, Larry Toal, was featured in an article in Chief Executive magazine. Larry, the chairman, president and CEO of Dime Bancorp in New York City, was a roundtable participant exploring the internet's effect on relationships with the customer. Shortly after reading about Larry, my eye caught a picture of William G. Morton Jr. sharing a piece of birthday cake with Boston Mayor Tom Menino. They were observing the 165th anniversary of the Boston Stock Exchange, of which "Moose" is chairman and CEO. Both Morton and Menino were wearing Red Sox caps as the photo was taken during the Red Sox-Yankee series!
If I may "indulge" for just a moment. Oct. 9 saw the wedding of our youngest, Matt '92 to Malia Ramsteck in Wilton, Conn. Much "Green" in sight as his brother, Andrew '87, Tu '92, and sister Gayle '85, along with Andrew's wife, Barbee, Tu '92, were all in the wedding. The rehearsal dinner was held in Wilton's Old Town Hall, a facility refurbished by Wilton's Historical Society. The president of the society is none other than Donna Ferries, the better half of our John! Small world...very easy to re-connect.
