As we continue to bask in the genuine warmth generated at our 40th Reunion, I am amazed at the number of e-mails coming not only from our new president Jim Wooster but from various classmates that have apparently "caught the spirit." Now if I can only learn to type someone gave me Mavis Bacon software I may get into the action! I don't know why I marvel at the intellect of our class. The class survey recently received from John Ferries showed that 74 percent of our class earned post-graduate degrees. This is an impressive record, considering the national average is less than 5 percent!
Our newly found momentum was most evident in our 1999 Alumni Fund results, as 65.7 percent of our classmates contributed. This is the highest percent participation since 1985. Congratulations should certainly go to Howard Greene, Tom Margetts, and Bill Colehower for their great efforts.
I recently received the most recent publication of Majid Tehranian entitled, Global Communication and World Politics. Professor Majid reflects upon the profound changes that are taking place in the world system, "charting a conceptual framework for understanding emerging patterns." Majid is a professor of intellectual communication at the University of Hawaii at Manoa and director of the Today Institute for Global Peace and Policy Research.
A press release from Cincinnati tells of Stuart Summers's recent election as president of the Association of Life Insurance Counsel. After graduation Stu received his LL.B. from the University of Connecticut School of Law in 1964. He joined the Ohio National Life Insurance Co. in 1967 and is presently a senior vice president and general counsel.
Up to this point, my brief tenure as secretary has been most positive. Unfortunately, one of my duties is to write the obituaries of our classmates. For those of you at Reunion, you may recall Roger Squire, from England, getting an award for traveling the farthest distance—he had, mistakenly, been listed in the obituary column of the Alumni Magazine! To avoid errors of this nature, I wait for "official" notice from the College. However, I certainly would appreciate any personal comments from classmates that might make these obituaries more meaningful This month I am sad to report the passing of Robert Walker, Rupert Schneider, and Michael Williams.
Snow will soon be falling here in Maineplease help my sanity by making an effort to "reconnect."
