Six a.m. I'm sitting on our couch having my morning cup of coffee, about to read my Bible and ask God to guide me through this day and RRIIEN-NGGGG! The doorbell pierces the silence. Who could be at our door at 6 a.m. on a Monday morning? I open the door to find a 7-foot police officer standing there, pad in hand.
"Good morning, sir."
"Good morning. Do you own a green Ford Windstar?"
"Yes, sir. Dartmouth green, to be exact." "Did you notice it's not in your driveway this morning? It was found a few towns over, hanging from a cliff, about to plunge the 15 or so feet into Lake Lashaway."
"Oh, officer, I'm so sorry. You know, I did mention that we had about two more weeks until our trip to Hanover to celebrate 20 years out of Dartmouth. My little green van just couldn't stand the wait any longer. I guess he thought he could head on up without us. Too bad we didn't teach him how to maneuver those cement pylons."
"Miraculously, your van seems to be fine. You know, if you bring your keys in at night it might not tend to 'wander' away." It's been a long day recovering my stolen van. However, the thought of reuniting in Hanover in a few short weeks will add inspiration to these Notes.
Congratulations to Cathy MacKinnonHurlburt and husband Mike. They welcomed daughter Elizabeth into the world in August 1999. Elizabeth is a big fan of Teletubbies—green ones, of course. Cathy is unsure whether they will make it to the Reunion. I think a little persuasion will get her there. Give her a call and tell her it won't be the same if she isn't there.
Making a Big Green name in the world of business: Brad Koenig is managing director of the Goldman Sachs Group. In a recent write up in Upside's, the word is that, "under Koenig, Goldman's tech banking group has become the preeminent player in Internet IPOs—and he did it without a star Internet analyst."
Also making a name on the tech scene is Derek V.W. Felske. Derek is managing the Tech 100 fund for Strong Capital Management Inc. of Wisconsin. LarryNorton was recently promoted to senior vice president, director of sales for the newly created and unified Simon and Schuster sales and distribution division in Fairfield, Conn. Larry was instrumental in restructuring the sales department in the company's MacMillan acquisition.
From Boise, Idaho, Laurel Smith and husband Kevin Donohue have taken up cross-country ski skating. I wonder if they have green skis. The two, along with daughter Emma, are planning to be in Hanover for our 20th. Bob Burnham and his family will also be at the Reunion. Bob is working for the health-care solutions group of Agilent Technologies.
Lest you have forgotten to send your "green" Alumni Fund donation, Merle Adelman writes: "As we move into June, I'd like to thank everyone for their contributions and support for this year's Alumni Fund. The class of '80 is recognized as one of the leading classes for the Alumni Fund, and it is because of all of you. If you are still considering your gift, please remember that you have until June 30 to pledge and pay (with some 'large' exceptions). I'll be happy to take checks at the Reunion!"
A big green thank you to our class officers who have led us through the past five years: Meg Coughlin Lepage, Wade Herring,Susan Green Spagnola, Merle Adelman,Leilani Crane, Holly Raths-Hart and DanZenkel. And, of course, our deepest appreciation to Marty Peterson and committee for the long hours and incredible job that went into the planning of our 20th Reunion— Twenty, Oh! Oh!
See you on the Green on June 16-18, 2000.
