I hope that by the time this column arrives in your mailbox the final remembrances of our long, hard winter in the northeast will have melted their way into oblivion. Sometimes nothingness slaps you in the face and miracles appear. Paul Elmlinger writes that he, Doug Sacks and Winston Hutchins all seem to have settled into the same small apartment building on the upper east side of Manhattan. "What are the chances of that?" Paul asks.
Omar Kahn's book From Kashmir to Kabul: ThePhotographs of John Burke and William Baker 1860-1900 was recently published in English by Prestel/Mapin and in French by Gallimard. The book tells the story of two of the earliest photographers of Afghanistan, northern Pakistan and Kashmir. Check it out at www.kashmirtokabul.com.
Mark Winkler sends news that he, wife Laurie May (Smith '79) and sons Justin (15) and Jordan (9) have been living in the Washington, D.C., area since 1985. Strayer University's board of directors recently announced the selection of Robert Silberman as chairman of the board. Strayer University is a proprietary institution of higher learning that offers undergraduate and graduate programs to working adults.
Eric Pfeiffer was recently named global marketing manager of metal products for Simonds Industries Inc. in Fitchburg, Massachusetts. More importantly though, Eric is now a grandpa and is hoping to see granddaughter MacKenzie Rose LeClair in the Dartmouth class of 2023.
Kathryn Flitner and husband Matthew Wallop announce the birth of their daughter, Fiona Suzanne. Fiona arrived on December 30, weighing in at 8 pounds, 4 ounces. She joins big brother Blake in rounding out the Wallop household to four. And,yes, I agree, "God is great!"
George Lester has been busy planning minireunion after mini-reunion. Most recently were a few hockey games, one in Manchester, New Hampshire, and one in Hanover. The Manchester hockey game attracted 24 people associated with our class, including Bob Lisk, Jerry Bird, Rich Ackerboom, Marsha Rich and Steve Camarino. The Hanover game, Dartmouth vs. Clarkson, was on February 15 and included a pre-game gathering at the house of Bill Mitchell '79. Also in the works is a Mt. Moosilauke weekend reunion July 11-13.
