Andy J. (Williams) Affleck wrote in with three big pieces of news. First, he graduated from the Harvard Graduate School of Education in June 1998 with a master's in education, concentration on technology in education. Currendy he works for Web CT, where he is the director of technical operations. Second, he got married on May 15,1999, to Ann Affleck, the founding director of student employ- ment at Dartmouth. Andy writes, "We were married in Jamestown, R.I., with a reception in Newport, which included a two-hour sunset cruise on an all-wood, 101 -foot schooner. I've taken her name (Williams is so boring)." Thirdly, he and Anne had their first child John "Jack" Henry William Affleck on March 4, 2000. "He's named for both of our fathers (both Jacks) and may be the third generation to attend Dartmouth (my father, the late Jack Williams, was a '53)." Anyone who wants to see this potential member of the class of '2l can visit www.raggedcastle.com/baby/. May 2000 was an exciting month for tie Cohen-Uram family—on May 12 MikeUram-Cohen officially became a doctor, and on May 17 he and his wife Wendy's baby girl, Anna Sophie, turned 1. Dr. Cohen- Uram will be doing his residency in internal medicine at Brown, and says he "would love to hear from anyone living in Providence (or anyone who cares....)" at wcohenuram@hot-mail.com.
Meg Somxnerfeld and her husband, Jay Matson 91, recendy bought a new home "in the burbs in Maryland." Meg covers arts, education, religious philanthropy and technology at The Chronicle of Philosophy. She writes, "It seems like every other week we are doing an update about Bill Gates giving a billion dollars here or there. How bizarre....I've written about Creative Capital, a new fund to support individual artists created by the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, which is where Andy Warhol's estate and many of his artworks went after he died. I also just wrote a fun piece about sabbaticals for non-profit leaders, so now I feel like I need a vacation!" They rang in the millennium with a Dartmouth gang that also included another '9O-'91 pair, David Voss, his wife Laurie Gill '91, and their new baby Gavin, "who made it into the 20th century by just a hair."
After receiving her Ph.D.in clinical pyschology in 1999, Sarah Stearns is doing a postdoctoral fellowship in Louisville, Ky. Also down South for graduate school, is Dave Connell, who is getting his M.B.A. at Duke after tours with the Foreign Service to posts many career diplomats only dream of, such as Rio de Janeiro and Rome. (I'm guessing that Durham must pale in comparison!)
Jane Blum Demarchi wrote me a lovely note at the end of last year, that I must apologize for not having included in the last column. She and her husband, John, moved with their son Jacob from Hong Kong to Shanghai in the fall of 1998. John has been starting a new school for expatriate children, and Jane worked for the U.S. consulate for a while and then quit a year ago to stay home with baby Jake and do some import-export business on the side. She writes, "Living in China has positive and negative points. I have a full-time housekeeper/nanny and I don't work, which is awesome. On the downside, we don't have access to all of the comforts of home. China has changed an amazing amount since I was on FSP. in Beijing in 1988. It is something of a badge of pride among expats to have been here then! As you can imagine, we long to see familiar and not-so-familiar faces. We welcome visi- tors and friends of friends, particularly if they come bearing diapers." Write them at demarchijb@hotmail.com.
Ramzi Nemo and I will split co-secretary duties while Jeanhee Kim takes a much deserved sabbatical. Keep the news coming!
