Come ye back for the 60th class reunion, June 11-13! That's the final reminder you'll get from this column. If you don't get your reservation in immediately, you'll miss a wonderful gathering with 65 positive attendees and another 20 possible arrivals, as of this late February writing. Vic Schneider and his energetic committee assure us of a great and varied program of activities. Class of'41s and their guests will be recognized by a distinctive green flannel unisex vest and, I hope, super-large print name tags.
It has been suggested that special recognition be given to classmates who have distinguished themselves in various achievement categories. Possible areas to be honored include: Most Hips Replaced, Most Knees Repaired, Closest Home to Baker Library, Tallest Californian (Ira Skutch may be a candidate), Most Consecutive Weekend Visits to the Hamp, Most Undergrad Hours Sleeping in Baker Tower Room, Most Milkshakes Consumed in One Hour at Macs and Most Frequent Flyer Miles Since Graduation (Bruce Brown not eligible).
In a more serious vein we can recall our Commencement 60 years ago and memorable voices from that era. Class Day exercises in front of Dartmouth Hall featured our class presidents welcome by Lou Young, the Class Day address by Larry Thompson, presentation of the class poem by Tom Littlefield, address to the College by Charlie McLane, the Sachem oration by Frank Hall, and the address to the Old Pine by Jack Brister. The Commencement exercises in the Bema included the valedictory to the College by Pete Keir and the valedictory to the class by our beloved President Hopkins.
The Commencement program listed prizes awarded to seniors, including the Barge Gold Medal for Original Oration won by Clif Stratton, the Grimes Prize for English Composition shared by George Herman and Chuck Bolte, the Haseltine Prize for Physics awarded to Owen Chamberlain, two prizes to Bob Thome for botany and biology and a prize in geology to Jim Page. These were worthy recipients who continued to bring honor to the class and College in their post- graduate careers.
