Ah, September. The leaves are beginning to turn in northern New England. An eager new group of freshmen has arrived on the Hanover Plain. Unbelievably, it was 16 years ago that we passed that way. Hardly seems possible.

If somehow you have lost or misplaced your Freshman Book during those years since matriculation, I recently received a note from the College Editor Josh Hill '56, who indicated that he has many still in storage for anyone who is interested in purchasing one. If you are so interested, please send a check for $1 made out to Dartmouth College and forward it to Josh Hill, College Editor, Box 6052, 111 Rogers, Dartmouth College, Hanover, NH 03755.

Moving back to 1985, George Wolohojian certainly deserves a round of applause (perhaps even a standing ovation) for his terrific work as director of the Alumni Fund for our class. At the time that this column goes to press, I do not have the facts and figures in terms of the final accounting, but I do know that our fund-raising effort for this year was very respectable. On behalf of the class I thank George for all of his work (and I apologize to him for misspelling his name in the last column), and I thank all of you for your contributions to the Alumni Fund.

Congratulations are also due to DavidChemerow, who was recently elected vice president and corporate controller of the American Can Company. Dave graduated Phi Beta Kappa from the College and thereafter proceeded down the road to the Tuck School where he was the recipient of the Hamilton Prize, was named an Edward Tuck Scholar, and was also the winner of the Walter A. Jacobs Prize. Dave and his wife, Doreen, live in Stanford, Conn.

I also recently heard from Tom Gianis and his wife, Carol. Tom is now a urologist with the Summit Medical Group in Summit, N.J. He has two daughters (Jennifer and Kimberly) and just recently celebrated the arrival of his son, Thomas Jr. Apparently the kid has a pretty good arm, so make sure that you keep him in training, Tom. Dartmouth can use some help in the backfield.

Bob Soltess has recently joined NASA in a special program. Bob writes that he "took a job with NASA headquarters with the newly formed Office of Space Station. I'm a program analyst, which means I'm supposed to understand certain aspects of the program as they impact on the budget and resources that we have been gracefully allocated by Congress ... I was at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md., working as a contract negotiater. I entered the federal service four and a half years ago by way of the Presidential Management Internship Program after I earned my master's in public adminstration from Seattle University." Bob and his wife of ten years, Darlene, and his two children, Jeffrey (five) and Andrea (three), live in Laurel, Md., outside of Baltimore. Bob noted that one important aspect of his job is to "explain how wisely we are spending your hard-earned tax dollars." I expect a deluge of correspondence to be fired in his direction.

From California I recently learned that former all-Ivy football player GreggBrown was recently appointed to the position of assistant to the president of Golden West Homes, one of the largest manufacturers of mobile homes on the West Coast. From 1981 until recently, Gregg was general manager of the industrial division of Fredericks-Hansen Paint Company in San Bernardino, Calif. Gregg will be overseeing the marketing and sales programs designed to strengthen the position of Golden West Homes in the manufactured-home market. Gregg has obviously been successful in transferring his skills from the gridiron to the real estate market. Gregg, his wife, and three children live in Riverside, Calif.

And finally, congratulations to two good friends. Bruce Ling recently celebrated the birth of his son, David. Bruce is a senior officer of Citibank in the Toronto office. In addition, Russ Kelly, who is currently in the midst of a radiology residency in Boston, also made the happy announcement of a new addition, his fourth child, Megan. And finally, I send news of the birth of my second son, Brendan White Harty. He was born on July 12, and I haven't had a good night's sleep since.
