It's income tax time, and we must not bother George Baine up in Red Bank, N.J. He's too busy helping his "little old _ ladies" to file their returns. George and Betty, as usual, visited the Carolina Outer Banks last October to do some surf fishing. I wonder if they ran into Bill Best, the award-winning sailor, at his yacht club in Kill Devil Hills. Bill recendy donated a silver trophy to be presented to the winner of the yearly 100-mile yacht race.
The holiday season, gone but not forgotten, brought some nice greetings from classmates. Don and Pat Stfilinan were pictured celebrating with their son and daughter and their smiling spouses. Stu and Audrey May created their own very attractive card just before they embarked on a cruise to Puerto Rico with their two daughters and spouses in tow as guests. Janet Locke, Norm's widow, provided a detailed account of her travels to such places as Cozumel and Grand Cayman plus a 17-day tour of Poland and the Balkans.
Another memorable Christmas card came from Al and Louise Ferguson in Pittsburgh. The card featured a beautiful snowscape painted by the versatile doctor. John Reed and Marjorie, he being another retired medic now in Gainesville, Fla., for the winter, see the Fergusons quite regularly. The men were roommates in Hanover. John is thankful he survived serious surgery several years ago, even if his golf handicap has suffered since his recovery.
A note of thanks to the class came from Margie Chisholm, who just lost her husband, Bunk, last October. She was grateful for the memorial book we had purchased in her husband's name. Margie, way out in Tucson, Ariz., sounded like a true Dartmouth mate as she noted that two of her grandchildren, Erin and Michael, are now in Hanover and love it.
Talking to classmates in advance of the March mini in Florida, I learned that Bill and Millie Steel had a rough time coming down south this winter from New Hampshire. Millie was hospitalized in Danbury, Conn., and then back at Mary Hitchcock with suspected heart problems. Happily it was only (?) an esophagus spasm, which is now being treated in Florida, where the Steels, the Mays, and the Froehlichs, Hans and Irene, were active in setting up the mini-reunion.
Grant and Joan Hesser were heading for the March mini in Crystal River. He retired to Stuart, Fla., in 1982 after heading a construction business in Cincinnati. They haven't attended many '41 get-togethers, but Grant was twice president of the Dartmouth Club in Cincinnati?
Had a nice phone chat with Joe Guidrey, who lost a leg last March due to circulation problems. He was justly proud of his progress to a walker and had high hopes of being able to balance on his prosthesis without the walker's aid. I'm sure Joe has the determination to achieve that goal; call or write him to find out how he's doing at 4505 Windjammer Lane, Ft. Myers, FL 33919; (941)482-3102.
