June 11,12,13, 2001! Our 55th Reunion! You've all received notice and reunion chair Jim Von Rohr tells me we already have 150 signed up to attend. Great, and I hope more to come. This will be my last effort before the reunion but John McClintock will be telling you more in his newsletters. And another little business item is that Tom Adams, our super fundraiser, has been hard at it to get you to come up with a record contribution for the Alumni Fund. Thank you, Tom, and all your agents. I had inquired about Jack Kennedy and John Condit in a recent column. I was rewarded with a letter from Jack. He retired from his law practice nine years ago. Taken up etching and painting, attends concerts and the opera. We '46ers are a cultural group, but you knew that. Told me John had moved to St. Augustine. He's still playing the viola and enjoying the beach. Jack stays in touch with Dan Fuller and Kim Jones. Thank you for the news, Jack.
I talked to Ham Bailey. You'll recall he became ill at our mini-reunion last fall. He spent some time in the hospital but is now home and rehabbing. I'm sure he'd enjoy hearing from you (781) 235-4402. I spoke to Reg Pierce. He and Nancy are off for two months to Ponte Vedra, Florida. He told me that recently married Bob Sandoe and wife are moving to Hawaii. That might rule out Bobs appearing at our 55th, but, Bob, people have come farther. George Swick and I broke the modern record for a phone talk. He was about to leave for his place in Alta, Utah, for a bit of skiing. George kept me spellbound by his WW II experiences. Those who know George ought to contact him. Absolutely an amazing career and a secret to me all these years. George long retired as an actuary.
John McClintock and I are trying to reconcile info from the College as to just how many we '46ers are. A sobering thought is that in the next 10 years our ranks will be thinned. I want to advise you that we have a rather large amount of money accumulated from our Book Memorial Fund. If we do nothing, upon the demise of the last '46er the money would go to the College. So we should be thinking how we wish to dispose of our money. And I don't want to hear about some Venetian Tontine (that's a gimmick where the last one gets it all). I read a book where three guys were left and each was trying to slip the other two some lesser-known Asiatic poison, leaving the survivor to make off with the loot. So Tontine's out! If you have any thoughts let Buol Hinman or me know.
I regret to inform you that the College has advised me of the death of our classmates William A. Schlander on November 23, 2000; Dr. Herbert S. Schiele on December 21, 2000; and Norman K. Anderson on January 23, 2001. We extend our deepest sympathy to their families.
