Reunion is just about here. As of late February, 92 classmates were definitely planning to attend, and another 45 were in the "maybe" category. I understand the 1960s had well over half of their living classmates in attendance last year. As this is written, I have just sent back the final proof of our class directory, which means it should now be in your hands. Take the book, and call all your friends or fraternity brothers and encourage them to come to reunion. Alternatively, do what Sam Bell is doing, and call everybody in the class in your home state. And come yourself.
Lots of unusual events are in the works for reunion. You've read about the silent auction. Now president Oscar Arslanian has appointed Joani and Dave Prewitt to run an auction of the use of vacation homes owned by classmates. "We plan to run the auction in conjunction with an appropriate event during reunion," writes Dave. "The donor can get a tax deduction, and it could spawn additional mini-mini reunions if several couples jointly 'win' a bid on the use of a vacation home." It's all part of our effort to painlessly grow the legacy at the same time as we're conducting our reunion giving campaign.
Al Orschel, Jim Watson and Frank Ginn and their spouses attended a reception in Chicago for the reunion classes of 1961 and 1976 to encourage reunion attendance and to boost reunion giving. Pete Bleyler was there in his role as reunion giving co-chair. Dean of the College Jim Larimore shared his insights regarding the student life initiative. "Dean Larimore indicated that the administration fully intended to work with fraternities and sororities, recognizing that these institutions are important and need to remain open to students desiring such options," Frank reported. "A '61 dinner following the reception gave us the chance to catch up." Pete reports that in San Francisco, attendees besides himself included host Bill Hutton, Mike Butler, Harry Altick and Fred Fields. Jim Larimore also spoke at this one.
At our reunion we will be electing a new slate of officers. Oscar has appointed Art Kelton as chair of the nominating committee; other members are Dave Armstrong, Bill Hutton, Pete Bleyler and Vic Rich. The committee is soliciting names for the following positions: president, vice president, secretary, treasurer, 45 th reunion chair, mini-reunion chair, class newsletter editor, Webmaster, head agent and bequests and trusts chair. The nominating committee also is asking each incumbent if he is willing and able to continue in his present position, if nominated! So, please let the committee know your thoughts.
One of our class's leading authors, Bruce Forester, has done it again. His new book, FatalBetrayal, came out in March. You can find it on the publishers Web site www.twinbridgespub. com, where there is a link to the book and its prologue. There is also a link to Bruce Forester, where you can find an interview with the main characters, Mort and Millie. Consider giving the book to your library in the name of Dartmouth.
