Bob Straub, "an easy to underestimate governor," is the headline in a February issue of the Oregon Bulletin. While fighting a frustrating battle with Alzheimer's, Straub is inrviewed by the Bulletin, which notes these Straub accomplishments: 1) as state treasurer, an early investor of public retirement funds in the stock market, 2) as an environmentalist, protecting a scenic stretch of coast highway and 3) making a gift of 10 acres of old-growth forest to his home town, Salem.

On June 14 we held another successful Cape Cod mini with 24 attendees: Howie Thomas, Doc Fielding, Paul and Betsy Randall, Ray McMahon, Howie and Joan Leavitt, Bud and Betty Miskell, Andy Caffrey, Bob and Jean Grant, Don and Louise McCorkindale, Preston Moore, Bob and Susie Gray, Bing and Anne Donaldson, Kent and Rachel Lane and two new faces: Hugh Lena and Tony Farrell. An email from Scott Mitchell, who comments: "My tennis fanatic friend keeps me hitting the ball daily. While it is way to late, I also watch my diet. I'm enjoying life. Stress is remembering to go to the coffee shop each afternoon." A lengthy letter from Jim Elleman describing his move from Jersey to Greenwich, Rhode Island, where he is near family members. Tried to entice him to attend our Cape mini but no luck. Bob Gray informs me that Vic Schermerhorn, a New London neighbor, is leaving the Granite State for a Pennsylvania residence. A note from Jack Milburn commenting on the great time we all had on last February's Panamanian trip. Jack added: "If George Shimizu and I are in good health we expect to join classmates in 2003 in Hanover." A reminder: Our fall mini this year is September 28-30, weekend of the Penn game. One of my problems with College records is obituary information—often nothing is forthcoming so I do appreciate it when any of you send me newspaper accounts of classmate deaths. Speaking of which, Bob Ehinger thoughtfully passed on a New York Times obit on our classmate Stan Neisloss, who died last May of Alzheimer's-related causes. Doc Fielding's wife, the talented Suzanne Bennett, lost her battle with cancer, also in May. Our condolences to the families. Stay well!
