Bud Hall and I have both been bugging the Alumni Records Office in an effort to obtain accurate data on our class—number of grads December '42, later, Tuck, Thayer, Med School '43 attendees and graduates. This search is in part prompted by some confusing numbers given in response to an inquiry from Pres Moore. I hope I'll have some clarifying data for May's column. Speaking of Pres Moore, while officially retired from I. M. Pei after 43 years, Pres keeps a hand in several architectural endeavors and has a son in the profession. After putting Howie Thomas on the spot to conduct an interview of Dr. Tucker's granddaughter, Howie writes from Tucson that he'll attempt such on return to Harwich in the spring. Howie is the lone '43 member of the Southern Arizona Dartmouth Club. On Cape Cod our Christmas luncheon—highlighted by the presence of area undergrads who recount their activities and impressions of the College scene—was notable for the enthusiasm the students expressed for new President Wright. Bud Miskell and I were the '43 contingent on hand.
Just after Christmas I received a great letter from Bill Porter explaining why time does not hang heavily—a 90-acre Virginia farm and a neighbor's spread of 500 acres to which he contributes sweat equity. "Toys" include a Kawasaki Voyager XII (he had a Harley in college), a tractor with bush hog, two riding lawnmowers, a CGS Hawk Ultra-Lite (having taken up flying "in a small way" at age 70). Also three boats-outboard variety. A wild fowl hunter, Bill also raises wood duck, mallards, and pheasant. Bill concludes with the modest observation: "Keeps me busy." Charlie Cusack writes from Oregon to confirm the dates of our 1999 fall mini, as he wants to tie it in with a visit to Nova Scotia. It is the weekend of October 9-10. Perhaps this info will help others coming from a distance who wish to plan extra activities. Charlie also corrects me on spelling and title—Dick Eymann (no "e" after the "y," was treasurer of Oregon, not governor). Thanks, Charlie, and my apologies to Dick Eymann. A note from John Keefe requesting a little PE for bequests & trusts. His pitch: "The class has 24 life-income trusts totaling $1,185,000 as of June '98—we are lagging four younger classes in dollar amount. There have been ten realized bequests totaling $480,835. Here again we are behind five younger classes." Bob Barnum, John's co-chairman on B&T, weighs in on a totally different matter, venting his spleen in a letter to the Alumni Magazine. The "Dartmoose" as a proposed mascot he finds "demeaning, trivializing and farcial." While it is not my role to editorialize in this column, I will say that I remain hopeful that I will live to see the return of the Indian symbol to the Dartmouth campus. Howie Leavitt's December letter had some thoughtful comments by Helen Kidder Seyfert. Did she put her finger on why so many of our grandkids are suffering attention deficit disorder? I have four more deaths to report: JohnMack, Maurice Darapier, ThomasKeeler, and Alan McBean. Our condolences to their families.
