Please welcome Mary Cipollone '02 into the extended class of '79 family. Mary was accepted into the Dartmouth Partners in Community Service (DPCS) internship program at the Tucker Foundation. The mission of DPCS is to inspire Dartmouth students to join with Dartmouth alumni and their families in addressing problems facing society. The DPCS program allows Dartmouth students to invest in their civic and personal growth and liberal education by participation in full-time, leave-term community service internships. Through your class dues, our class is a contributor to the DPCS program. Mary is the "first" official 1979 class intern. Dr. Marian Hodges Brouns, a geriatric practitioner in Portland, Oregon, will be Marys mentor this summer. Mary will be interning at Waverly Children's Home-Trillium Services. Their services include a temporary residential place for youth between the ages of 5 and 12.The children there have been recommended by the state for having trouble at home, being homeless or other related issues. They also run a daytime schooling program for children recommended by the public schools because they are not succeeding. These children have behavioral problems, learning disabilities or other difficulties that make it difficult for them to perform well in a public school environment. Thanks to Marian for volunteering to mentor. We wish her and Mary an exciting and rewarding experience.
June 23-24 marked the farewell festivities for recently retired Bill Johnson, Dartmouth coach of golf and resident P.G.A. professional at Hanover Country Club since 1967. Attendees represented classes from '68 through '04, and according to Gordon Daisley, the class of' 79 walked away with first place in Saturdays golf competition at Lake Morey Country Club in Fairlee, Vermont (the Hanover track was unavailable due to some pretty nice renovations underway). Led by U. Joe Henley's 69,4 birdies from blind squirel G. Daisley, and some clutch recoveries from Dave "Shorty" Dowd, the '79s matched out the current team members' group to bring home the crystal. Enjoyed a great dinner roast in the new boathouse and top-drawer hospitality at Sand "Bags" Mitchell's in preparation for Sunday's shoot-out. We wish the Johnsons happy retirement at their new home in Pinehurst. (So, is it still a sport when linksters 25 years older can beat the varsity squad?)
There was a new posting to the yearbook section on the '79 Web page by Katrin Dobbs von Gierke. Katrin is in Germany tending to her three children. Check out the full story and more at www.happy.dartmouth.org/classes/79/.
Sadly, Chip Debelius has resigned as cosecretary. Without going into all the gory details, the reason is that the DAM editors modified his Notes submission and refused to print an apology. (While Chip had joked that Walt Immel was the new head of General Electric in the May/June issue, those all-too- literal editors didn't get it, and switched the name to Jeff Immelt '78.) Your class officers are pursuing the issue. Chip, I know your classmates agree with your action. Personally, I enjoyed sharing the Notes duties with you. Unfortunately, class, you're stuck with me for a while.
The DAM is working on a cover story for the January/February 2002, issue that will focus on Dartmouth's "special places." Through a collection of anecdotes and reminiscences by alumni, faculty and students, the DAM hopes to document the "sense of place" that the College has long enjoyed in the hearts and minds of its graduates. In advance, I ask you to let me know your favorite spots on campus and why. The DAM editors promise you will not be mis-quoted.
Keep em coming!
