No space this time for my usual introductory witticisms. Here's why: Got a nice note from Chris Cummings '78. Seems he was riding up the lift at Stratton Mountain when he noticed the person to his left was his Alpha Delta brother Dr. Larry Wolf, an accomplished orthopod in the Philadelphia area. Larry was at Stratton working at the clinic in exchange for skiing and lodging for his family. During the discussion, Larry was paged on the radio to attend to one of those not-so-fit Americans who had crossed the line of barely in control. Glad you're with us, Dr. Woo. Thanks Chris.
Pete Roby is chillin' after 10.5 years at Reebok. He's enjoying hanging out with family and staying out of wife Sandra's way. He golfed with Tom Bird, who's in Concord, Massachusetts, with wife Tracey and sons Stewart and Seth. Pete also spent time with Dr. Marc Gautier, who is practicing medicine at Dartmouth Med. A pic of the hair-challenged duo is on the class Web site.
Received news that Dave Brown is president of the Greater Greenville, South Carolina, Chamber of Congress, promoting economic interests of the local business community. Dave came to Greenville after six years as president of the Fort Wayne, Indiana, Chamber of Commerce. Dave's family includes wife Maggie, and sons Greg, 17, and Elijah, 7.
I received a non-electronic letter from Rick Katz. Rick left Lehman Brothers in 1995 after 12 years as managing director, after acquiring a family-owned building materials company. In 2001 that company was acquired by Carolina Holdings, the nations largest building materials distributer. Rick serves as regional manager for Carolina's Massachusetts operations. Rick, wife Christi and children Sabrina, 10, Alexa, 7, and Joshua, 3, reside in Dover. Rick often sees Bob Richards, whose children and Rick's are classmates.
Kurt Stange, M.D., Ph.D., was elected to membership in the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences. Congratulations, Kurt!
David Title was named by the Connecticut Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development as the 2001 Educational Leader of the Year. David, Waterford's assistant superintendent, is described by his boss as a "consummate professional who has always given the extra effort that has made the difference in the Waterford public schools and our greater community." He has been active in staff and curriculum development during his 11 years in Waterford. Well done, David!
Not one to sit idle, Pamela Joyner was recently elected to the San Francisco Ballet's board of trustees. Pamela served for five years in the San Francisco Ballet Auxiliary and is on the board of directors for Dance Theater of Harlem. She is also a founding partner of Avid Partners L.L.C., an investment strategy consulting firm in San Francisco. Oh, she serves on the Dartmouth board of trustees, too. Whew!
Dr. Christian Campos recently joined UMass Memorial Health Care and the faculty of UMass Medical School. Chris is a cardiac surgeon and a fellow of the American College of Surgeons. The Worchester native has studied how lowered cholesterol affects survival in patients with coronary artery disease, and is examining the effect of diabetes on patients who have undergone coronary artery surgery.
Saw a nice article about the Vermont craft industry that mentioned Wendy (Menzel) Mcintosh. Wendy and her husband produce personalized Christmas stockings for Garnet Hill, a mail-order catalog of luxury items. Working in the home allows her to be with her family, which includes daughter Ernesta, 2, and she just plain loves to knit! Wendy's stockings end up being distributed around the world. Too cool!
That's it. Keep em coming!
