QUOTE/UNQUOTE "We as Dartmouth' graduates must critique our present society, must envision an ideal society and then must join the struggle to build a world dedicated to those ideals." —BRIAN STULTS '02, IN HIS VALEDICTORY ADDRESS JUNE 10
ON A NEAR PERFECT JUNE SUNDAY, 1,056 HOT AND EMOTIONALLY spent 'O1s and 515 advanced-degree candidates received their diplomas at the College's 231 st Commencement. Encouraging each graduate to be a "doer" rather than a "drifter who is blown about by every breeze," former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright, the keynote speaker, challenged the class to "use the knowledge gained here at Dartmouth to be more than a consumer of liberty but also a defender and enricher of it, employing your talents to heal, help and teach."
Many students, faculty and administrators wore lavender ribbons in memlory of professors Half and Susanne Zantop, who were murdered winter term. And up until the last minute there was uncertainty about who would deliver the valedictory address. In the end, Brian Stults '02, who earned a perfect 4.0 grade-point average while completing his degree in only three years of study, shared the podium with salutatorian Terrence Wong, the 'O1 with the highest GPA. They split the seven-minute time slot usually reserved for the valedictory speech. Total length of the proceedings: just over two and a half hours.
