North Korean missile sales. Chemical weapons in Iraq. A nuclear Iran. These are not issues most of us would like to ponder on a daily basis. But during his 33 years in the U.S. Foreign Service, John Stern Wolf '70 has had to tackle eachand numerous other delicate matters—head on. Now his responsibilities have only increased. Wolf, sworn in just after the terrorist attacks in 2001 to head the State Department's efforts to stem the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction worldwide, has temporarily left his post in order to lead the team on the ground in the Middle East to help navigate President Bush's "Road Map to Peace." Wolf will lead a U.S. team charged with monitoring implementation of the plan and making sure both sides keep their promises. While negotiating peace between Palestinians and Israelis may be the one job more difficult than the one he's leaving, Wolf sounds confident and ready for the challenge. "This is a special time. It's not that other times weren't special, but post-Iraq, post-September 11, we believe there's an opportunity to try and make it work, to realize the vision of two nations living together in peace and security. And we're going to." Michael Glenzer '01
