More from the most recent class meeting held in October. The meeting started on Saturday, October 20, in the Class of 1965 Galleries at Rauner Library. Attending were Hank Anion, Sven Karlen, Steve Fowler, Mike Bettmann, Steve Waterhouse, Mike Gonnerman, Jim Griffiths, Allen Zern, Bob Blake, Ted Atkinson, Tom Campbell, Roger Hansen and Pete Fredericks. Highlights from that meeting (continued at Pierces the next day) follow:
Fall Minis (Hanover): Homecoming in 2002 is scheduled for the Harvard game November 2. It was agreed to schedule our Hanover mini-reunion that weekend, although there was sentiment to move the mini back to autumn "prime time" in future years if possible.
Class Mini-Reunions (out of Hanover): The next class out-of-Hanover mini will be held in Hong Kong October 1-6. Sing Chiu, a Hong Kong resident, will organize the program. Highlights are expected to include dinner with President James Wright. The 2003 out-of-Hanover mini will center on the theme of our collective 60th birthday. One idea was to organize regionally, such as with groups working together on a Habitat for Humanity-like program in multiple locations. Ted Atkinson agreed to investigate possibilities and propose alternatives for future consideration.
Class Projects: The first recipient of a class of 1965 scholarship is Erik jacobson 04. The class goal is to grow the scholarship fund to $100,000 by June 30,2 003, with an interim goal of $75,000 by June 30,2002, at which point we would be entitled to a second Class of 1965 Scholar. Two new, possible class projects were reviewed: something involving the new Carson Hall and a class of 1965 teaching excellence award, to be awarded annually with a cash prize. Sven Karlen and Steve Fowler agreed to follow up on these ideas. The status of the class effort to obtain works from '65 authors, poets and photographers was reviewed. The intention is eventually to locate published works of members of the class of 1965 in the '65 Galleries. Steve Waterhouse agreed to take this one for action with respect to the College; Ted Atkinson agreed to develop a list of authors whose works he believed resided in the class archives.
Planned Giving: Bill Webster has distributed to all classmates a good flyer describing various ways to structure contributions and gifts to the College. Give it a look-see and do what is right for you and the College.
Confession: Bob Murphy reported during the Saturday dinner that the mystery person who left the note in the walls of South Wig back in 1962 was Tom Meacham. Confession at last!
September 11: Nine Dartmouth alums lost their lives in the attacks on 9/11, none from our class. A memorial service was held on Sunday, October 21, in Rollins Chapel. Donations to a special Dartmouth/United Way September 11 Fund is being left to the discretion of individuals.
Back to news on individual classmates next edition. But I cannot do that without input (or I could make it up—hmmm)! Happy New Year to all!
