"Her spell on them remains." To what extent this is true is evidenced by the latest opus from our Tenner poet in the midwest - Billy Williams. The several references to "The Winter Song" should stir some Tenners near enough to Hanover to get back for the 60th.
This Tuesday is the Tenth of March .. . I've lagged too far behind The March of Time: I've been so cold I've nearly lost my mind.
Those lines of Dartmouth's "Winter Song" Are chilly as cold feet:
Plus chill interpolations by The Bard of Cherry Street.
"The wolf-wind wails at door-ways" ... (It "howls" all day, all night)
"The ice-gnomes march from Nor ways" (They come stomping, full of fight)
"The Great White Cold that walks abroad" ... (If he looks somewhat weird, It's caused by heavy icicles That decorate his beard).
The while we squirm as shut-ins in The depth of our deep-freeze, We long to hear the TV say "Tomorrow ... warm Spring breeze!"
Then we can stop our dreaming ... Sunny Florida, La Jolla; And toss in Acapulco, plus The newest craze ... Ha-woy-ah.
Billy drops his poetic urges to add "Tomorrow eve comes our Chicago dinner with President Kemeny. I'd love to go but no soap. Keep me posted as you get reports on him. He 'sounds' mighty good to me."
The following paragraphs referring to one Tenner's hometown are presented just to remind Tenners that interest in local government can sometimes be made a matter of action even though the Tenners have reached into the eighties:
"In Troy, N. Y., there is a year-old body called Trojans for a New Troy, usually referred to as "TNT." Russ Meredith, its first president, was recently reelected.
"The group was organized to help the city manager form of government have a fair chance to succeed in producing better government. When the political powers agreed to adopt the city manager form, they set up the City Council to be made up of members elected by the seven districts in which they divided the city. This allowed retaining all the partisan political advantages previously enjoyed through the old ward politics set-up.
"The City Council, dominated 6-1 by the one party, seemed determined to prevent the City Manager doing a manager's job. Within the first five years the city had three managers. The partisan political pressures were too much for them.
"After the first manager resigned, Russ wrote some letters to the local paper, pointing out that the voters could never get rid of the pressures until they got rid of the voting for Council Members by districts. He maintained that the Council must be elected 'at large' so that the strength of the ward politicians would be reduced. The minority party proposed the same idea and enough signatures were obtained to place the proposal on the ballot last fall. At the same time the Council majority proposed that the city give up the manager plan and return to the old mayoralty-type. Court action kept that proposal off the ballot and the 'at large' proposition was a 5-1 victor. Voters became thoroughly stirred and managed to defeat two of the Council members up for re-election.
"TNT assumes the job of keeping voters posted and alert on the actions of the City Council to see that the Manager (the fourth one, recently engaged) is allowed to do a real managing job."
From a note received from Treasurer MacKendall: "Andy Scarlett is debating on whether or not he and Bertha will go to Reunion. However I am sure they will be there with bells on. Art Lord will also be on hand." Mac says he also will be with us.
Mentioning Andy suggests that we remind you of his Fund deadline - June 30. Don't miss it.
