Mitchell Friedman '74 intends his paintings and prints to be seen as allegories, accessible to many interpretations: "I hope those images seem familiar at first, only to be discovered as Something unfamiliar by the observer." The detail from his monotype The EarlyPlowman (previous page), like much of his work, shows a familiar figure at work in a pre-industrial landscap. Mitchell enjoys the immediacy of making a monotype. a one-of-a-kind print produced from a freshly painted surface. "Making a monotype is a bit like a performance: once started you cannot stop until the work is completed, or else ail is lost. The spontaneity, intensity and a certain lack of control all add to the energy of the image making." Friedman exhibits work : frequently in Fairfield County. Connecticut. and New York City. His next show is Scheduled for November at the Stamford (Connecticut) Museum.
