We are fortunate to have received the news about Howie Pearsons nomination to receive the American Pediatric Society's highest honor, the John Howland Award. Never one to blow his own horn (his piece in our 50 yearbook was brief), this info came from Howies colleague to Pete Henderson to me. More on Howie: he spends his summers playing medical director of Paul Newmans Hole In The Wall Gang Camp and carves totem poles there as a sideline.
The College, your class president and secretary have collaborated to resume the quaint custom of reminding classmates that yet anoth eryear has gone by. The resumption of birthday cards going out to classmates was my idea, and I thought the College would give us a reduced price for our greeting card that has the watercolor of Dartmouth Row, circa 1840. Henry Nachman negotiated a reasonable price for the cards and envelopes. On the left coast I coaxed my graphic arts expert to have the birthday message printed in the correct shade of green at a fair price.
My next challenge was to resolve the conflicts between the College records of birth dates and the class records. Thirteen was the beginning number and after phone calls, e-mails and letters, only three conflicts remain. Igor Mead, after setting me straight on his birth date, weighed in with his favorite place in Hanover as an undergraduate. No surprise, he being an art history major, that Carpenter Hall got his nod. The Tower
room, he confesses, was a close second.
After establishing Don Riders birth date I learned that his favorite place was the Theta Delta Chi house doing whatever Theta Deltes did in those days. Fred Ranney has happy memories of time spent in the Tower Room and the Nugget.
Continuing the effort to learn about favorite places, I discovered that Suds Bissell spent many days being pampered by the medical staff at Dick's House. That happened several times because of hazardous life on the football field and the Deke house, I guess. Russ Gardners recreation time and favorite place centered on the SAE house basement, specifically ping-pong with brothers such as Mase Weare. The Bema was only for graduation ceremonies, I always thought, but it had other uses as well. Dick Eitel went up there for relaxation and sunbathing and that became his favorite place. Earl Brabb spread out his favorite places to include anywhere that fellowship took place for him. Examples are DCU, camera club, lacrosse and SAE.
Peter Crowe tells me that his most pleasant memory was the Middle Mass suite that he shared with Pete Stein, Dick Patton and Bill Miller. Neighbors "would just come in as they reached the fourth floor and wanted to sit down."
By the time you read this, the signup for our fall mini will be in your mailbox. The date is October 11-13. Always well attended by the faithful 51s, give it a try.
