Sixty years ago we were enduring our first Hanover winter, complete with deep snow, great skiing conditions and a numbing cold. That was then and today here is how some enlightened classmates tolerate New England winters: They flee to Florida! Gathering to celebrate their luck and good sense in February at the Lauderdale Yacht Club, courtesy of AI Loehr and Gerry, were the following snowbirds: Jack Giegerich and Carole, Bob Hopkins and Joan, Dwight Allison, Dave Batchelder and Schatzie Ludwig, Elaine Bovaird, Bing Broido and Lois, Fred Chandler and Jane, Bob Fiertz and Marilyn, Chick Geilich and Nina, Jack Giegerich and Carole, Bob Hopkins and Joan, Chuck Packard and Marion, Sam Roberts and Nancy, Barry Spiegel and Elsa—24 in all.
The March 1958 issue of DAM had this to say about an impending marriage: "Next comes engagements, and the word on that this month concerns Dave O'Neill and Harriet Albert of Lebanon, Pennsylvania. Harriets a graduate of Carnegie Tech and Dave's now working as sales representative for Standard Oil of New Jersey. They will tie the knot in June." Asked what they plan to do to celebrate their 50th I learned the following: Plans not firm yet but will probably include a celebration at their home in Yarmouth Port on Cape Cod, Massachusetts, with children and grandchildren and also his brother Dick 52, who lives nearby. Sam Roberts in that same issue reported that Buck Scott broke his leg in two places while skiing that winter. Also, Uoye Miller noted this about Buck: "But Bucks been mighty busy, and is apparently one of the first to climb aboard the political bandwagon. He tried for the school board in Greensburg, Pennsylvania, running on the Democratic ticket, which I'm told is the equivalent to suicide in Greensburg. Well, Buck still isn't on the school board but he came home well ahead of his party." Trying to reach Buck as I wrote this column I did learn from Mary that he lost a few other elections as well but did win a seat on Greensburg's charter commission before they moved east.
