I think I have found my replacement as class secretary! What a great "abundance" of news I received from Bill Gray, secretary of the Dartmouth Rugby Club. Bill went into great detail describing the anniversary weekend May 17-19 that celebrated 50 years of rugby at Dartmouth. Great stories and photos about Dick Liesching and Kurt Christiansen, also in attendance. It's hard to believe they could have had so much fun—makes me wish I had not had to spend so much time in Baker Library! Bill and Barbara are living in Setauket, New York, and Bill is definitely using the word "re-connect" in a positive way.
Speaking of re-connecting—while many were enjoying themselves at our mini in Jackson Hole, I had a visit from Tom Chatfield. Tom and Marge, living in Sunnyvale, California, were visiting the coast of Maine and stopped in the Middle-of-the-Road. Having not seen each other since '5 9, we exchanged many stories. Tom has recently retired from his career in accounting, and plans to become more active in class events.
Dave Richards checks in from Perkinston, Mississippi. Dave enjoyed an interesting career, going from Proctor & Gamble to becoming a banana importer for five years—one in Ecuador, to finally settling in with J.C. Bradford & Co. as a partner. Dave retired a year ago and livings on a small horse farm, "25 minutes from the Gulf, 11/2 hours to the Big Easy." He invites all to visit.
Nick Monsour, self-appointed "class antiquarian," recently discovered nearly 150 documents relating to Dartmouth, Hanover, and Jonathan Currier, proprietor of the Dartmouth Hotel from the 1830 s on. There is even a deed signed by Rufus Choate. This treasure was found in Yucaipa, California—a world away from New England! Nick, living in San Bernadino, reports seeing Duane Conover, retiring and traveling, and Jack Lampe, still teaching with no plans for retirement.
The sudden and untimely passing of Bill Sherman was an opportunity to bring several classmates together to remember, reminiscence and celebrate Bill's life. Larry Friedrioks and Paula hosted Herb Schoenberg and Anne, Rudy LaRusso (Roz), Mickey Cohen (June) and Bob Filderman (Marilyn) at their home in Los Angeles.
Al Munro not only "cajoles" us into giving to the Alumni Fund by mail—he is also very "physical" about his position! He had breakfast with Bob "Lefty" Cline, went to see Mike Melvoin perform in New York City—also joined Howard Greene, Shelly London and Warren Dechter at the eventhad dinner in D.C. with Stew Economou and Bob Sands, saw Bob Johnson at a Dartmouth meeting in Connecticut, and finished this "re-connecting" six-week period by having lunch with Mike Tighe in Chicago. If we fail to meet our goal, it won't be Al's fault!
Ed Hobbie, still working part-time, recently visited with Tim Rich in Seattle. Ed and Pat are spending more time at their beach-house on Long Beach Island in New Jersey, where they enjoy entertaining their two grandchildren who live nearby.
Jack Daniels announces a swim team reunion during our October mini—he and Susan are excited about returning to Hanover.
Keep those Green Cards coming!
