A nice way to start this column—a note from former class secretary Dick Masterson. Dick retired from his job with the federal government in 2000, happily packed Juliana and their belongings and relocated from the Washington, D.C., suburbs to the countryside in south central Pennsylvania. He now writes decisions on employment disputes, on a subcontract basis—when he's not hitting golf or tennis balls. Juliana, the master gardener, and Dick are now enjoying the benefits of small-town living, similar to their earlier years in upstate New York.
Enjoying the transition from Philadelphia to Sedona, Arizona, Jack Nason misses the Upper Valley and hopes to return—not just for reunion! Jack certainly has been promoting reunion, making contact with Sam Swansen, Peter Jaffe, Andy DuBoff and Jack Clark.
Difficult for me to visualize Bob Czelusniak with "backand hip problems," forcing him to give up golf! Living in Delray Beach, Florida, "Celoos" reports that wife Abbie recently broke both ankles, so doubts they will join us in June. We'll miss you, and hope you plan to join us for the 50th.
Surfermd@aol.com, a.k.a. Mike Kistler, will also not be able to join us at the reunion. Mike, with wife Ginny, appears to be thoroughly enjoying the California lifestyle, i.e., surfing, horseback riding, and training their German shepherds. Mike, a neuroradiologist medical director, is quite concerned with "liberal" swing of Dartmouth, and would love to see breakdown of our class as to conservative/liberal. I bet John Ferries could answer that one!
Karl Holfzschue was recently elected secretary of real property section of the New York Bar Association, a 5,000-member group. Providing he "behaves," Karl should be chairman in three years! Karl has retired as adjunct professor at Fordham, but still is writing supplements for books advising lawyers on buying and selling real estate. Karl will definitely be in Hanover in June.
Owen Fiss, the Sterling Professor of Law at Yale, recently wrote a book of essays, The Law asIt Could Be. To quote some of Owen's peers, as to the content of the book: "Owen Fiss is the moral compass of legal liberalism. ..our guide to true north...he makes the case for unvarnished reason as the only and best guide to law and life....Owen Fiss is our leading theorist of public law adjudication." Sounds like a most successful work to me—congratulations, Owen.
If you are thinking about real estate in Florida, give realtor Dr. Nick Procino a call at (561) 6208953. Living in Boca Raton, Nick seems to be entering a new phase of his life.
Dave Williams, living in Rockport, Massachusetts, hopes to join us in June. He speaks fondly of, perhaps, "camping out" near the Ledyard Canoe Club.
On a personal note, I want to say thanks for the many calls and cards during the recent loss of my wife. Sheila and I dated at Dartmouth, were engaged within days of graduation and married in 1960. She shared my excitement as we watched our three children graduate from Dartmouth, and loved spending time at our home in Quechee. She loved the Upper Valley, she loved Dartmouth and she loved the class of 1959.
The sun will shine.
