It's August and the ebb and flow of the tides suggest that summer will soon be coming to an end. This past June marked another generational birth, as a new class of Dartmouth graduates entered the world and older classes returned for their reunion. As yet another reminder of my own age, my father, Allen Bildner '47, returned to celebrate his 55th Dartmouth class reunion. Time marches on for all of us.

Turning to the world at large, the summer, like the financial markets, has been unsettling, with fires in Colorado, congressional hearings on the Hill and the world sitting on pins and needles while the Middle East, India and Pakistan play Russian roulette with our future. Life is imitating art with a vengeance—just ask anyone who has seen Sum of All Fears. It's become hard to distinguish the difference between reading TheNew York Times and a Clancy novel. Now that's a truly scary thought.

And now the mailbox.

Richard Lane sent me a picture of three generations of Dartmouth graduates: his father, John Lane '47; his son, Russell Lane '06; and himself. Richard, ask your dad how my father's speech was at their 55th—I gave him the sage advice to keep his comments to less than 60 seconds or they would have less people back for the 60th! On a serious note, congratulations on achieving an increasingly rare accomplishment—three Dartmouth generations. Richard works for Unilever, keeping our food safe for consumption. He and Mary live in New Jersey and, besides Russell, they have two other sons, Matthew and Andrew.

James Moriarty has been appointed senior director for Asian affairs at the National Security Council. According to a White House announcement, Jim has been in the Foreign Service since 1975 with stints in Rabat, Islamabad, Beijing,Taiwan, Mozambique and Nigeria and at the United Nations. He lives in Virginia, is married to Lauren and they have two children. We're lucky to have people such as Jim who are willing to serve their country. Congratulations, Jim. You have quite a job in front of you.

Ken Bohlin was recently featured in an article in the Worcester Telegram & Gazette. The former Dartmouth varsity basketball athlete is now chief executive officer of Informa Financial in Westboro.

Finally, I read a wonderful feature article in the Multichannel News about our own Rick Allen, who is. president and chief executive officer of National Geographic Ventures, having served prior stints as head of business development at Discovery Communications and as a deputy assistant to President Clinton from 1993 to 1995. In that capacity Rick was responsible for setting up the Clinton administrations Americorps initiative, something we can all be proud of. It's a great article and Rick has accomplished an enormous amount in his career.

And I recently learned that Robert Jackson serves as a captain in the Naval Reserve and has command of one of the largest commissioned fleets in the Naval Reserve, the First Naval Construction Regiment. Needless to say, Rob has been busy since 9/11. Ron and his wife live in San Diego and he runs Sempra Energy Cos.

That's all the new that's fit to print. Make the most of the rest of the summer and keep the mail coming.
