My filing system isn't the best but eventually I find old scraps of paper with scribbles concerning classmates who have called or written to report on their well being or not. An example: Hex Harrigan's Christmas card, buried in the file, in which he expressed the hope he had my correct winter address, as he "had lost one address book and couldn't read the other." He's a fan of North Carolina as a place to retire and compared his Highland Farm to "John Jenkins' retreat in Hanover." He expressed regret at having to miss last year's 60th due to unexpected health problems but hopes we'll have a 70th! Back in February, while I was talking with Scott Mitchell, a widower since 1998, he confessed to keeping company with a younger woman who collects antiques! In 2005 Scott will be eligible to compete in the over-85 N.C. State Tennis Tournamenthe hopes this will raise his ranking (seed) from fourth to second or even first. Scott was trying to make contact with Ray McMahon and in a subsequent note confirmed that Ray was still residing in Pawtucket. John Kimball, who died in November 2002, was in the news this past March as, for the second time in less than six months, his family established a scholarship in his name for the benefit of Topsfield, Massachusetts, residents. A $500,000 trust, it will provide scholarships and grants to students of history. Last November the family established a scholarship in John's name at the College specifically available for Topsfield, Wakefield and Melrose students as well as those from other North Shore communities. Recently lost classmates are George Hebard, Bob Stokes, Warren Van Dyk and Dick Barkhorn. Anote from Ed Bock reminisced about life at the Daily D, where Dick was the technical editor, and their-meeting near Tokyo at the end of WW II. Ed also recalled talking with Jim Stewart at our 60th and Jim remarking about a critical/rough review of the Aegis staff by Dick Barkhorn. Carol Stokes wrote me to say that Bob passed quietly of a heart attack while reading and while visiting with family. Our condolences to each family. Fall mini: October 8-9! Stay well!
