Where did the summer go? Seems that's all we hear these days as the air gets cooler and the days shorter. By the time you read this the leaves will be changing and fall will be in full gear. As we left the campus a few weeks ago, the College was getting ready to welcome the class of—areyou sitting down forthis—2010. Its hard to even get the words out, but its true; it's the class of 2010.

Now on to the news.

Northern Trust announced the promotion of our own Rick Waddell to president and chief operating officer of the corporation and a member of its board. As many of us know, Rick has been at Northern Trust since he graduated Dartmouth, and prior to this well-deserved promotion Rick has held a variety of executive positions with Northern Trust. Well done, Rick.

Houghton Mifflin just published Caroline Preston's third novel, Gatsby's Girl, based on the real-life romance between F.Scott Fitzgerald and Ginevra King. It's a great read. Caroline lives in Charlottesville, Virginia, with her husband (a fellow writer), Chris Tilghman, and her three sons.

And finally comes news that James Erwin, a partner at Pierce Atwood LLP in Portland, Maine, has been ranked as one of the best attorneys in the nation in the latest 2006 survey by Chambers and Partners, a United Kingdom research firm. Jim leads the firm's employment practice group. In news that will warm the hearts of Dartmouth faculty, unlike many of us, Jim was characterized as "intellectually strongwithasharp mental ability to match." I know, the quote doesn't really make much sense, but you know how the British like to use the English language. In any event, those of us who know Jim know the recognition is very well deserved.

On a more somber note, I also just received word that Roosevelt Thompson died this past spring in Texas. Our thoughts are with Roosevelt's family and friends.

Enjoy the rest of the fall, winter won't be far behind. Nancy and I send our best.
