Greetings from Hanover! Bud Munson here, subbing for Bob Huke, who has been sidelined by surgery. All classmates cheer for speedy, total recovery. Bob sends special thanks to Bob Herrick for a memorable 55th reunion report.

The Dartmouth Student Assembly has polled students asking for their vote to choose a mascot from 13 finalists: Bear, Granite, Moose, Penguins, Phoenix, Polar Bear, Wolf, Salty Dog, Yeti, Big Green Giants, any Doctor Seuss character, Evergreen/Lone Pine Tree and Foresters/Woodsmen. Honestly, we did not make this creative, soul-stirring list up. Any one would surely bring a stadium crowd to its feet in ecstatic hysteria. Beware Brown Bear!

The Indian symbol was not included because "it might offend some members of the community." Apparently the assembly hasn't heard that Mike Hanitchak '73, director of Native American Studies, remarked at our 55 th class meeting that he understood that the symbol has great traditional meaning to many Dartmouth alumni and that a great many Indians do not object to an Indian symbol presented in a dignified manner. Pete Foster initiated continuing discussions with Mike about use of the symbol.

Bob Huke asks that the Indian be added to the proposed mascot list and requests that all classmates send their vote for a mascot to him by e-mail, huke@dartmouth.edu, or mail at P.O. Box 98, Norwich, VT 05055.

No details or final confirmation yet, but Ivy League presidents are adopting tougher academic standards for athletes, modifying off-season practice rules and setting a limit on the total number of athletes the Ivies can enroll in any four-year period. Higher academic standards will translate into a 40-point higher SAT score, and a slightly higher class rank and GPA average. Several Dartmouth coaches wish that they were trusted more as, in fairness to the College and athletes, they do not consider candidates who cannot cope with academic rigors. Bob Huke hopes that this will end a reportedly Harvard practice of reserving from normal admissions five slots for additional football recruits.

So long, good fortune to all and stay tuned.
