President Bush has nominated John Keane to be ambassador to the Republic of Paraguay. The appointment caps a distinguished career in the Senior Foreign Service. John served as the director of Central American affairs and, for seven months, was the acting deputy assistant secretary in the Bureau of Western Hemisphere Affairs. His overseas assignments include political officer in Brasilia and Santiago, Labor Officer in Buenos Aires and Lima and deputy chief of mission in Caracas and Guatemala.
Citigroup in New York named MichaelMasin as chief operating officer and chairman of a new committee that will revamp the banks business practices. Mike will oversee all Citigroup functions other than the operating businesses and will report directly to Citigroups chairman and CEO Sanford Weill. Masin, a lawyer by training, had been managing partner of the New York office of O'Melveny & Meyers before moving to senior positions with GTE. When Bell Atlantic and GTE merged to in 2000, Mike become vice chairman and president of the newly created Verizon, a post he held before his move to Citigroup.
Dr. Larry Hopperstead, director of Central Maine Medical Centers trauma program, has been presented the Maine Emergency Medical Services Governors Award in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the Maine EMS system." Larry has been a long-time leader in paramedic education and helped establish Life Flight of Maine, a medical helicopter service. Chief of staff Kay Rand represented Governor Angus King '66 at the ceremony. Larry graduated from Dartmouth Medical School, did graduate work at the University of Chicago and a surgical residency at Mary Hitchcock Hospital in Hanover. He has been practicing emergency medicine in Maine since 1978.
Dr. Lance Dodes has written The Heart of Addiction, in which he rejects conventional explanations that addiction is a medical problem and provides evidence that addiction is a response to underlying feelings of helplessness and powerlessness. He's in a position to know, since Lance is an assistant clinical professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School, a member of the Division on Addictions, and is also director of the Boston Center for Problem Gambling. It's a must read before my next trip to Foxwoods.
Another new book, this the second novel by William Carpenter, has received fine reviews. TheWooden Nickel describes the adventures of people aboard a Maine coast lobster boat .weaving contemporary issues into a story of a dysfunctional family trying to make life work.
Jeff Flitter is an attorney/consultant with Con Edison, secretary of the Dartmouth Club of Long Island and is an elected member of the N.Y.S. Bar Associations house of delegates. Wife Susie directs corporate training at Newsday, the Long Island newspaper, and is active in Save the Children. But what keeps them really busy is Jillian, 3, and 1-year-old identical twins Allison and Claire.
