I always enjoy reading the notes prepared by the venerable doctor Bob Rainie, better known as "Slip," as he writes for the Dartmouth Medical School Alumni Notes, class of 1942. In the winter edition he comments on AI "Fergie" Ferguson, who was the subject of a cover feature in the recent issue of Pitt Med magazine. Al, also known as Bob, built an orthopedic dynasty during his three decades at the University of Pittsburgh. He trained 30 individuals who are now orthopedic department heads all over the world. Al retired in 1986 after repairing and replacing thousands of wornout joints. What a wonderful ministry.
Doug Atwood, the retired Care executive in Bangladesh now living in Sarasota, advised that he had no exciting news to report. But when pressed he said he is happy with his two artificial hips (Dr. Ferguson, please note) and his bi-weekly bridge games. Stay well, Doug.
Larry Barnett, the retired dentist, has been wintering at Tarpon Springs, Florida, since 1972. An inveterate golfer, Larry is waiting for his sons course to be finished in two years at Crozet, Virginia. In the interim he and Patricia have sold their northern home in Charlottesville, Virginia, and are renting in that area. The ex-Marine gets his daily exercise walking two miles with his miniature poodle at 7 a.m.
George and Betty Baine were reached on the phone in Little Silver, New Jersey, where he is preparing income tax returns for the 57th year. His first client was a pig farmer in Connecticut and a later notable return was filed for Curt Blefary, the 1966 Rookie of the Year who pitched for the Baltimore Orioles. George recalls the player's income was a grand total of $9,000. George also remembers he and your scribe were second looies in the Signal Intelligence Service in the Big War. At least we didn't have income tax problems.
Talked to Jim Eckels (coincidentally, another Signal Intelligence lieutenant) about his work as head agent for the class College fund. After 22 years as treasurer of the Episcopal Diocese of Utah Jim knows plenty about rais- ing money. He was pleased to report that as of January '03, the 1941 donations were 25 percent ahead of normal years. Let's all get behind Jim's leadership and reach our goal for the year.
