Disillusioned with Joe Millionaire? Here's a far more interesting alternative to the contrived and shallow reality shows on TV: Uzbekistandiary.blogspot. com. In virtually real time, you can experience the fascinating life of an American journalist living in Uzbekistan. Marika Olsen writes a daily journal of her experience accompanied by beautiful photographs. Her stories of the UZ people and her struggle to promote free press and human rights are by turn humorous and poignant. This slickly designed Web site offers a porthole into the lives, customs, food, fashions and thoughts of the UZ people and the challenges she faces working within an unwieldy and often illogical infrastructure. Editorial comment by Marika: "And don't forget sex, scandal and political intrigue!" Really! It's all there! But, unfortunately, the free expression of opinion we so take for granted in the United States can be dangerous in Uzbekistan, and for security reasons Marika will have to move the Web site address soon. You can always find it by Googling "Uzbekistan Diary."
After 11 years with CNN, producing for CBS and traveling to Nepal and Thailand, Marika got a terrific offer with Internews, an organization dedicated to promoting free press. She packed up her chin-up bar and snowboard and headed to Uzbekistan in December of 2002 for a 16-month stay.
Marika plans on coming to reunion June 13- 15. Now if she can make it all the way from Uzbekistan, there's really no excuse for anyone not to show!
