As I look at these Notes I see a statement of the class' collective experience; a continuing contribution to our society, some hard work, some fun along the way and finally, some loss. We appreciate it. It is life.
Dick Cahn, who practices law with his son, Daniel, is no stranger to class action suits or to altruistic ventures. He has now taken on a new and important case. He is suing, pro bono, the federal government on behalf of approximately 800,000 senior citizens in regard to their Medicare plus health coverage. The case has to do with an apparent inequity for the citizens of a four- county suburban group regarding their required payment as compared to that required of their counterparts in New York City. The government pays a different premium per month, per person to HMOs providing more health insurance for city residents than they do for these suburban residents. Dick is trying to unravel the formulas from which these figures were derived and will battle for a more equitable distribution. As usual, Dick will be a formidable adversary as he engages his heart and soul and intellect for the cause.
"Can democracy develop in Latin America without United States assistance? Why should the United States care? How is Latin America rel- evant to U.S. economic growth in global compe- tition?" Ron Scheman, director general of the Inter-American Agency for Cooperation and De- velopment, addresses these and many other ques- tions using his vast knowledge of the Americas in his new book/1 Partnership for the Americas in the 21stCentury. "Breathtaking in scope and full of insights about the region...a must," writes Ambassador Myles Frechette, president of the Council of the Americas. "A vision for our continent," adds Thomas F. Mack Mclarty, former White House chief of staff and special envoy for the Americas. This is Rons fourth book on inter-American affairs, and it offers profound insights into the interrelationships and effects thereof between the United States and the countries of South America.
I still have a book of matches with Bill Johnsons picture on it, which I saved from when he ran for the U.S. Senate. I am just as awed to have a classmates daughter run for a seat in the House of Representatives. Diane Goss Farrell has just entered the race for the House of Representatives from the Connecticut 4th District. Lots of luck, Diane!
